SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for Yakuza 5 follow. (Skip)

Tsubasa Kurosawa (黒澤 翼, Kurosawa Tsubasa) is the main antagonist of Yakuza 5. He is the seventh chairman of the Omi Alliance and the former patriarch of the Kuroha Family. He impersonates a detective of the Osaka Prefectural Police under the name Kazuhiko Serizawa (芹沢 和彦, Serizawa Kazuhiko).

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Kurosawa's face is modeled after his voice actor, Eiji OkudaWP. He is an old man of average height and gray hair.

Attire[]

Kurosawa wears a charcoal trench coat over a blue shirt, as well as gray slacks and black dress shoes.

Personality[]

Listen, in the end, yakuza are mostly idiots. When you run a family, it's your job to rule over these simpletons. Charm counts for nothing in this game. Know what kind of men flock to a guy in charisma? Useless idiots. A yakuza without smarts is trash. At this rate, yakuza will end up as nothing but trash.

— Kurosawa in Yakuza 5

Kurosawa is the very definition of a more modern member of the yakuza. Codes of honor, friendship, and respect are meaningless, and not much more than a nuisance to him. He is disgusted at the more traditional styled yakuza that follow their dreams, and bonds of charm, seeking nothing but power and money. He believes that every yakuza that even remotely shows any sign of "decent" behavior is useless to him.

In spite of his claims to be solely business-minded, Kurosawa is primarily driven by the deep resentment he feels towards charismatic and principled yakuza, since he feels he spent his entire career being overshadowed by these types of men. Kurosawa claims that, while he had to scheme and backstab his way to the top, these charismatic yakuza would often attain more success than he did through their sheer personality and force of will or through their principled leadership. Kurosawa's ultimate aim is to rid the yakuza of men like Kiryu, Watase, Saejima and Katsuya, so that only ruthless pragmatists like him will remain.

Background[]

At an unknown point in time, Kurosawa fathered a son named Masato Aizawa. Kurosawa was once a low-ranking member of a fourth-tier Omi Alliance family. His sole motivation was climbing the ranks, and he began handling the dirty work nobody else wanted to touch. He was treated extremely poorly, even being forced to eat feces for a botched job on one occasion. Deprived of support and constantly tormented by his superiors, Kurosawa gave up on his pride and integrity and resorted to using any means necessary to rise through the ranks, killing his aniki and his boss in an act of betrayal. By 1997, he became the patriarch of the Kuroha Family, based in Kobe.

Through decades of brutality, treachery, and tenacity, Kurosawa became the seventh chairman of the Omi Alliance, and he appointed Masaru Watase as his captain—a man he planned on disposing eventually. Having lost any form of pride in reaching the top, he was unhappy. Around June 2012, he fell ill, thinking it was pneumonia, but was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Panicked, he realized he had no one to leave his legacy to, and asked his son, Aizawa, to be his successor. As Aizawa swore up, Kurosawa began his plan to take over both the Omi Alliance and Tojo Clan, with the plan of handing both organizations to Aizawa. He dispatched many accomplices across the country, and stole the identity of an Osaka detective named Kazuhiko Serizawa.

Yakuza 5: 2012[]

Kurosawa meets Kazuma Kiryu in Nagasugai, introducing himself as a police officer who knows of Kiryu's background. Kurosawa mentions the disappearance of Daigo Dojima, and convinces Kiryu he was kidnapped by Masaru Watase. Kurosawa tasks Kiryu with confronting Watase, as well as keeping watch over Masato Aizawa and Yu Morinaga.

Several days later, Kurosawa meets Kiryu again, offering to light his cigarette. While the two smoke, Kurosawa mentions Watase's visit to the police morgue, and mocks him. Kurosawa claims he has been in the force so long, he started rooting for the Omi Alliance despite the fact they keep "old-school guys" like Watase around. Before leaving, Kurosawa suggests turning on the news in the car, knowing the news would reveal Goro Majima's supposed death.

Heading to Sapporo, Kurosawa murders Abashiri Penitentiary's warden in order to prevent Taiga Saejima's parole, and orders Shigeki Baba to break Saejima out of prison, and to assassinate Taizo Kitakata. After Saejima's prison escape, Kurosawa tracks him down, and "arrests" him for possession of a firearm. Kurosawa convinces Saejima to work with him, bringing him to Kamurocho, and telling him that Yu Morinaga is behind Majima's death.

Returning to Sotenbori, he conspires with Kamon Kanai if he can find information involving Naoki Katsuya and Watase's plot to reveal the role of the traitor as they suspected that someone wants the influential heads of the Omi and Tojo dead and Kanai was able to have Kan Ogita kill Mirei Park and retrieve a letter belonging to her from Majima. He encounters Shun Akiyama and threatens him to stay out of the affairs of the murder of Park. He heads to his old home in Nagoya where he replaces Fujita with Yuki Sawada as the head of the Nagoya Family, planning to regain control of it, however the attempt was temporarily thwarted by Tatsuo Shinada and Sawada's efforts. He kills Fujita to ensure his silence in the role of manipulating the situation to rise to a prominent member of Omi and returns to Kamurocho to make his play.

Arriving in Kamurocho, he arrives in time to deal with the remnants of the brawl held by Watase, Katsuya, Saejima and Kiryu to lure him out. He then reveals his motivation for bringing them all here and the goal was to murder them all as their influence is too great and creates naïve Yakuza for the Omi, and shoots Katsuya who take a bullet meant for Watase. With only one bullet left, he allows Kiryu and Saejima to decide who dies first but is interrupted by Daigo who reveals that he knew about his plot to kill the influential members in both Tojo and Omi and challenges him to one final duel only for Kanai to save Kurosawa from certain death. Making his final moves, he mobilizes the combined might of the Omi and sends members of his clan to incite a conflict at the Millennium Tower during Haruka's concert as he plans to kill Haruka using Baba. Despite his efforts, Kanai and his men were defeated by Akiyama as Watase brings not only the Omi Clan members loyal to him but the families from Fukuoka and Sapporo to assist him.

He is soon confronted by Saejima who he reveals has Majima as a hostage and forces both parties to fight, knowing either Majima kills Saejima or Saejima kills Majima and goes to prison after this is all over. His attempt to kill Haruka fails when Baba, moved by his cellmates and Saejima's kindness, relents after a fight with Shinada and tries to have both men killed only for Katsuya and Daigo to arrive in time to stop him. At that point his cancer flares up and he reveals the backstory of what he had to do to ensure his legacy lives on and entrusted it to Aizawa who was then defeated by Kiryu.

Kurosawa's fate is unknown, presumably losing his position as chairman and eventually succumbing to his illness.

SPOILERS END HERE. (Return)

Trivia[]

  • Kurosawa is implied to have been a powerful fighter in his prime. He confronted Watase, Katsuya, Saejima and Kiryu on the neighboring building's rooftop while armed; Daigo surmised from this that Kurosawa really was sick, as the old him would never have done it this way and would've killed them with his own hands himself. He also catches Kiryu off-guard when they first meet by instantly pinning him against a wall.
