Yakuza: Like a Dragon: 2000-2019[edit | edit source]
Around 1976, Akane begins seeing Masumi Arakawa some time after her employment at Shangri-La has ended. This is done in secret due to Arakawa's arranged engagement to the patriarch of the Hikawa Family's daughter. Akane soon learns she is pregnant, which prompts Arakawa to come clean to his patriarch about the relationship. However, he delays this until Akane is due on New Year's Eve. While in the maternity ward, she is warned by Arakawa that she and the baby are being hunted down by the Hikawa Family for disgracing its patriarch.
She escapes the hospital and gets in contact with Arakawa, who urges her to meet him at Cafe Alps, but goes into labor shortly thereafter.[a] Apparently looking for somewhere safe to deliver the baby, she decides on her former workplace, Shangri-La. With her newborn son, she manages to make it to the coin lockers at Shinjuku Station before the Hikawa Family start to catch up to her. There, she is instructed over the phone by Arakawa to hide the baby in one of the lockers to make herself less recognizable as their target and hesitantly agrees. She places the baby into coin locker #101 and entrusts his safety to Arakawa before fleeing the station.
While on the run, she lets Jiro Kasuga know of the plan and informs him that her life is in danger. Though she briefly finds refuge in a bar, Akane is ultimately discovered by the Hikawa Family, taken away, and killed.
Notes[edit | edit source]
- There are conflicting accounts regarding the exact timeline of events. Arakawa's account states that he and Akane got into contact while she was already in labor at the hospital, whereas Jo Sawashiro's account states that she went into labor after she had already escaped the hospital and contacted Arakawa.
