Around 1976, Akane began seeing Masumi Arakawa some time after her employment at Shangri-La had ended. This was done in secret due to Arakawa's arranged engagement to the patriarch of the Hikawa Family's daughter. Akane soon learned she was pregnant, which prompted Arakawa to come clean to his patriarch about the relationship. However, he delayed this until Akane was due on New Year's Eve. While in the maternity ward, she was warned by Arakawa that she and the baby were being hunted down by the Hikawa Family for disgracing its patriarch.

She escaped the hospital and got in contact with Arakawa, who urged her to meet him at Cafe Alps, but went into labor shortly thereafter.[note 1] Apparently looking for somewhere safe to deliver the baby, she decided on her former workplace, Shangri-La. With her newborn son, she managed to make it to the coin lockers at Shinjuku Station before the Hikawa Family started to catch up to her. There, she was instructed over the phone by Arakawa to hide the baby in one of the lockers to make herself less recognizable as their target and hesitantly agrees. She placed the baby into coin locker #101 and entrusted his safety to Arakawa before fleeing the station.

While on the run, she let Jiro Kasuga know of the plan and informed him her life was in danger. After that, she was believed to have taken refuge in a bar she and Arakawa were familiar with, discovered, and killed.

However, in reality she fled to the Philippines and then back to her birthplace in Hawaii, and managed to escape from her hunters with Palekana's help. Having found a second chance at life, she started working at Palekana Orphanage, eventually becoming its director. During this time, she was visited by Jo Sawashiro, and told him to falsely report her death to Arakawa. Seeing her change in lifestyle and not wanting to kill her in front of the orphans, Sawashiro complied with her request, and since then began exchanging letters with her to prevent her from getting homesick and finding out the truth about the child Arakawa was actually raising, and on Akane's request, kept her up to date on Kasuga's life and wellbeing. Shortly after Sawashiro was freed from prison, Akane received another letter from him that confessed what had really happened on the night she left her baby. She sent one final letter to Sawashiro in response, begging to see Kasuga.

Not long after, Lani Mililani showed up at Palekana Orphanage's doorstep, having nowhere else to turn. Akane decided to contact Bryce because she was carrying the real Sage of Palekana's pendant and will. When he showed up and saw Lani, he immediately took out a gun and attempted to kill her. Akane and Lani ran away from the orphanage, eventually finding shelter at Night Square with help from Kiyo, one of Yutaka Yamai's assistants.
