Big Squirrels Don't Cry (ラストピクチャー, Rasuto Pikuchā, "Last Picture") is the 32nd side case in Lost Judgment.

Plot[]

In Fukutoku Park, Futaba tells Yagami that she has found another squirrel and asks if he wants to look at it with her. The picture, just like the first one outside of Seiryo High School, is of a squirrel listening carefully. Yagami uses his Noise Amp to find the source right above the squirrel: two acorns, one of which he hands over to Futaba. She states she needs to leave and runs off. An old man approaches Yagami and tells him he also used to hunt squirrels. He is surprised when Yagami says he found two acorns, and thanks him. The old man talks of a rumor that a storybook artist draws them around town near the anniversary of the passing of his frail and sickly daughter. The artist made storybooks for her, which she greatly cherished, and stated she wanted to find treasure with the squirrels when she healed.

A man in a suit picks up the old man for a meeting with his editors, and Yagami overhears his name - Saionji. Amasawa calls Yagami and tells him that while she was not able to find clues from her childhood picture book, she learned it was made by Kazuha Saionji. Yagami says all he found from his research was acorns, and that he will tell her the story another time before hanging up. He then sees that the squirrel drawing has disappeared and muses that he and Futaba may find treasure again someday.

Details[]

I ended up looking for squirrel art in the park with Futaba-chan.

The squirrel led Futaba-chan and I to a couple of acorns, so we each took one for ourselves. Never seen a kid so happy over something so small. But then she suddenly ran away, and as if to take her place, a kindly old man came by to talk. According to him, a storybook artist painted these squirrels in memory of his daughter, who had passed away from an illness. His assistant called him "Saionji-sensei," which would mean he shares his last name with Futaba... Could it be?
