Pool, also known as Billiards (ビリヤード, Biriyādo), is a minigame in the Yakuza series.

Gameplay[]

The objective of Pool is to pocket the targeted ball(s) with the cue ball. In most modes, all balls are placed together in a triangular shape at the start. The shot where the cue is shot into the triangle is scatter the balls is called the Break Shot.

In a two-player game, the one who goes first is decided by a "Banking" phase, where the two players must hit the cue ball straight forward. The player who goes first is decided by whichever balls stops closer to the player.

When a player's turn is finished, the other player will need to hit the cue ball from the position it ended in on the previous player's turn.

Trick Shots[]

  • Carom Shot: The cue hits two balls, the second of which is pocketed.
  • Combination Shot: The ball hit by the cue hits another ball, which is pocketed.
  • Kiss Shot: The ball hit by the cue is pocketed after hitting another ball.

Foul[]

A foul is incurred if the cue ball is pocketed, if the cue ball fails to hit any balls, or if an incorrect ball is hit in a mode where specific balls needs to be targeted. When this happens, the opposing player is free to place the cue ball wherever they please.

Modes[]

Nine-Ball[]

The objective of this game mode is to pocket the Nine-Ball. The balls must be hit and pocketed in numerical order, however, it is not a requirement for all other balls to be pocketed before the Nine-Ball can be pocketed; a trick shot can be performed to pocket the Nine-Ball early.

In the event of a foul, all pocketed balls remain pocketed unless the Nine-Ball is pocketed.

A Break Ace is when the Nine-Ball is pocketed during a Break Shot, provided a foul is not incurred.

Eight-Ball[]

The objective of this game mode is to pocket the Eight-Ball. Unlike Nine-Ball, all other balls must be pocketed first, which can be pocketed in any order. When the time comes to pocket the Eight-Ball, they player must select which pocket to sink it in. If it is sunk in any pocket other then the one selected, the player loses. If it is pocketed before the other balls are pocketed, the player loses.

With two players, 15 balls are used, 14 of which are split into 2 sets: "Lows" (1-7) and "Highs" (9-15). Which player gets which set is determined by the set of whichever ball is pocketed first during a player's turn. If an equal number of balls from each set is sunk during a turn, the sets remain unassigned until the amount of balls from one set exceeds the amount sunk from the other set in a turn.

In the event a player pockets a ball from the other player's set, a foul is incurred and the ball remains pocketed. Failing to pocket the Eight-Ball also incurs a foul.

Four-Ball[]

Rotation[]

The objective of this game mode is to reach or surpass 61 points. 15 balls are used, and the amount of points a player gets for sinking a ball corresponds to the ball's number. The balls must be hit in ascending numerical order, but trick shots will allow pocketing balls out of order.

If all balls are pocketed with neither player reaching 61 points, the balls are re-racked and another break shot takes place, but points are not reset.

In the event of a foul, the pocketed balls will remain pocketed but will not count toward either player's score.

Puzzle Pool[]

Puzzle Pool is introduced in Yakuza 5. In one shot, the player must pocket a red ball while avoiding black balls. For this mode, the pool table is laid out in a specific manner with barriers spread out.
