Daisaku Minami (南 大作, Minami Daisaku) is a minor character featured in Yakuza 4. He is a former member of the Majima Family.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Minami is a young man with a slim but toned build. He has piercings in his ears, left eyebrow, and below his bottom lip, as well as several indentations suggesting that he may have had even more once. He also has a stubble-length goatee and a black, mohican hairstyle.
Tattoo[]
Minami has a combination of a traditional Japanese irezumi and several Western-style tattoos. It consists of a snake wrapped around a skull on his back, a knife piercing a skull above the face of a woman on his left arm, and a black panther on his right arm. He also has more tattoos on his front torso, including two roses on the left and right of his chest, and the English word HONOR on his abdomen.
Attire[]
He wears red sweatpants and brown shoes.
Personality[]
Minami is a wildcard with a rather quirky and prideful personality, but shows respect for his boss. Because of this, and his admiration for Majima, he adopted a Kansai accent.
Involvement[]
Yakuza 4: 2010[]
Minami and four other members of the Majima family are causing a scene in Shun Akiyama's hostess club Elise while looking for a hostess named Lily. When Akiyama is called to the club to deal with them, he finds Minami singing Kamurocho Lullaby with the other Majima family members watching him with feigned enthusiasm. Minami introduces himself then proceeds to sing another song but gets interrupted by Akiyama, who asks why they are there. Minami then tells him that they're there on Majima's orders to find Lily, though doesn't know the reason why. After Akiyama refuses to give her up, Minami attacks him. After Akiyama defeats him, Minami attempts to continue fighting until he is stopped by Majima, who reveals that he is looking for Lily in order to protect her.
Later, Minami waits for Taiga Saejima's arrival after barging into his hideout and subduing everyone in the room. When Saejima arrives, Minami tells him that Majima wanted to meet with him the next night at Millennium Tower.
Minami later appears at the Millennium Tower when Saejima arrives looking for Majima. On Majima's orders, Minami and several other members of the Majima family test to see how strong Saejima is before Majima meets with him. Minami stands back while lower ranking members of the Majima family fight Saejima and only steps in to fight him personally after they are all defeated. Again, Minami will be defeated but refuses to give up until Majima shows up.
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii[]
Worried for Majima's safety, Minami goes to Nele Island with Nishida.
Other media[]
Yakuza: Dead Souls[]
Majima mentions Minami during a conversation with Saaya Kawai, saying, "One of my men didn't drink at all, but then he started practicin' fire breathin' with alcohol and got to be a pretty good drinker".
Yakuza Online[]
Minami appears in one of Ichiban's stories in Yakuza Online, wherein he unwillingly befriends the latter after a confusing night spent eating ramen, singing karaoke and fighting Omi Alliance men.
Fighting Style[]
Minami is fought twice in Yakuza 4: the first time as Akiyama, and bolstered by other Majima Family members in the second, against Saejima. He is a skilled, highly agile fighter, who is quick on his feet and a swift attacker. His fighting style and aggressiveness changes depending on how intoxicated he is.
Sober[]
Minami begins both of his encounters with this style, which consists of basic Kung Fu techniques. He is at his least dangerous in this phase and does not go on the offensive too often. His moveset is listed below:
- a Rush Combo consisting of a left backfist, followed by:
- a right palm strike and a spinning right axe kick,
- a charged right palm strike and a right shoulder blade strike, or
- a spinning left hook kick;
- a hopping left push kick (unused),
- a high left handplanting side kick,
- a flying left side kick as a running attack,
- a grab attack where he slams his opponent's head on the ground with his right hand, before executing a spinning right elbow drop;
- a grab reversal where he grabs Saejima's wrist and spins around to break free, before throwing a kneeling right palm hook to the knee (2nd fight only); and
- a low left side kick as a downed attack.
Drunk[]
Minami becomes intoxicated after drinking from his bottle of liquor. When he does so, he adopts an entirely different fighting style based around Zui Quan — wild and unbalanced, but with a lot of variety. He drunkenly stumbles about and flails his arms wildly to attack. His moveset is comprised of:
- a Rush Combo consisting of a right palm hook, a spinning left backfist, and an overhand right;
- a left push kick-handplanting left spinning axe kick combo,
- a stumbling left backfist,
- a front flip axe kick after stunning his opponent,
- his running attack,
- his grab attack,
- his grab reversal (2nd fight only),
- a left palm strike knockback as a guard reversal, followed by a drop kick;
- Kazuma Kiryu's Knockdown Reversal, which can stun his opponent;
- quickstep attacks, which can stun his opponent, including:
- a handplanting left spinning axe kick after frontstepping,
- a spinning right/left backfist after sidestepping left/right respectively, and
- a left back handspring kick after backstepping;
- a turning downward headbutt as a downed attack,
- a kip-up as a get-up animation, and
- a taunt where he balances on his left leg while beckoning with his left hand.
Minami will enter his first Heat Mode state after drinking from his bottle a second time, signified by a dark pink and purple aura. Unlike other bosses, however, Minami does not gain super armor in Heat Mode, making it possible to knock him down with normal attacks.
He begins using a number of extra attacks, which include the following:
- Finishing Blows for his Rush Combo, including:
- a spinning left backfist and a spinning left heel kick, and
- a simultaneous spinning left backfist-left knee strike and two right breakdancing helicopters;
- his second combo with an additional double front kick and a left back handspring kick,
- a right breakdancing helicopter finisher after his stumbling backfist, and
- an attack he performs when Saejima is stunned, where he pulls out a lighter and chugs a bottle of liquor, before spitting it out around while igniting it with the flame to spray fire (2nd fight only).
When he enters his second Heat Mode — signified by a larger, fluorescent pink aura — he starts fighting much more aggressively and quicksteps frequently.
When the alcohol wares off, Minami exits Heat Mode and returns to his normal, sober state. This is indicated by him stepping back into a squat position, and holding his hands up to his face as if to throw up.
Trivia[]
- In the original Western localization of Yakuza 4, Minami is referred to as "Junior Leader" of the Majima Family.
- The mesh for Minami's arm tattoos contains geometry covering his forefingers, and these are UV mapped to a section of the tattoo texture that contains ambient occlusion, bump and specular maps made for this section of the body. This suggests that Minami was originally going to have tattoos on his fingers, but the developers decided against it, leaving the invisible tattoo finger mesh on the finished model.
- Singing karaoke songs is Minami's favorite pastime, with GET to the Top! being his favorite song.
- In Yakuza 0, Minami's fighting style is reused by Bed of Styx fighter Kazuya Chidori.
