Kyohei Jingu (神宮 京平, Jingū Kyōhei) is the overarching antagonist of Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami. He is a corrupt politician who leads the MIA.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Jingu has a distinctive large mole on his forehead. His graying hair is slicked back, save for a few strands that hang downward near the right side of his head.

Attire[]

Jingu's attire consists of a medium gray two-piece suit with the jacket having three buttons, a dark gray overcoat, a white dress shirt, plain gray necktie, and dark gray leather oxfords. In the photo with Yumi and Haruka, he wears a two piece gray suit over a white dress shirt and a black striped necktie.

Personality[]

I will join forces with the Omi Alliance and rise to the top of Japan. The Omi will unify the criminal underworld, and all of that power will be mine. Then I can realize my ambitions!

— Jingu

Jingu is relentlessly ambitious, utterly remorseless, and devoid of empathy. Wickedly cold and calculating, he manipulates both events and people with the singular aim of expanding his political power, with no regard for the notions of civic duty, transparency, or concern for others. To achieve his lofty goal of controlling both Japan's political system and the country's criminal underworld, Jingu was willing to commit various atrocities: abandoning his family, sending assassins after his ex-girlfriend and daughter, having a journalist murdered, embezzling large sums of money and avoiding responsibility by framing it on a third party, among various other crimes. Jingu's sociopathy is also reflected by the fact he revels in the suffering that he causes, laughing maniacally at Kiryu as he details his plans for national domination. He is also highly cynical and condescending, believing he has a right to power and influence, and seeing those around him as lesser, especially if they profess ideals like love and justice, which he considers to be mere obstacles in the pursuit of authority.

Jingu is also disloyal, viewing people as mere tools or stepping stones to his greatness. He freely makes and breaks alliances, favoring whoever will bring him closer to his ambitions. He betrays the Nishikiyama Family due to their family to retrieve his money, forming a new partnership with the Omi Alliance, whom he also plans to dispose of once he assumes power.

It is implied that at one point, Jingu had some humanity left. In their confrontation, Yumi tells Jingu that "strong emotions" guide people's actions, and that Jingu "once had those emotions too". It is unclear whether he was faking this, as sociopaths are all-too capable of doing, or whether he was genuine about caring for his family, only to be unduly swayed by the promise of riches and power.

Background[]

During his younger years, Jingu worked with Masaru Sera in political campaigns, forming a long-lasting partnership. When Sera became the third chairman of the Tojo Clan in 1993, Jingu helped him steer the Tojo into an era of prosperity.

Involvement[]

Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami: 1995-2005[]

Jingu meets Yumi Sawamura after she suffers temporary memory loss after Akira Nishikiyama shoots and kills her attempted rapist. Jingu works with Sera to launder his ¥10 billion by putting it in the Tojo Clan's reserves.

Yakuza 4: To prevent the money laundering from being exposed, a Touto Bank employee named Shun Akiyama is framed for embezzlement and subsequently fired. The money was meant to finance the private and low-profile Okinawa Penitentiary No. 2 with the collusion of corrupt police deputy commissioner Seishiro Munakata.

Yumi and Jingu get together and conceive Haruka Sawamura in 1996. Jingu leaves Yumi and Haruka when he receives a marriage proposal from the Prime Minister's daughter, desperate for the power and riches that this politically beneficial marriage would provide him. He orders the death of a reporter who was threatening to reveal the truth about Yumi and Haruka, due to the risk of a scandal such a reveal would bring, and requests Sera to hire an assassin to kill Yumi and Haruka; a plot secretly thwarted by Shintaro Kazama.

In 2005, Jingu faces a dilemma as Sera breaks ties with him and helps Kazama and Yumi steal the yen to reveal Jingu's money laundering scheme, the disclosure of this theft by the Nishikiyama Family prompting a civil war in the clan. Jingu colludes with Nishikiyama, who would benefit from Jingu's bribery of yakuza to control the Tojo Clan. Jingu also covertly forms ties with the Omi Alliance,[b] which he also seeks to control, marking the start of his betrayal of Nishikiyama.

Both the Nishikiyama Family and the MIA make attempts to capture Haruka in order to lure out Yumi, who had gone into hiding under an alias, and coerce her into giving them the money, but their efforts are thwarted by Kazuma Kiryu, who had been released from prison and become Haruka's protector through his own investigation into Yumi's disappearance.

At Ares, Jingu and his men arrive to kill Yumi, Haruka, and Kiryu, noting that Yumi and Haruka are nothing more than a problem for him. Yukio Terada arrives and takes aim at Jingu, but Jingu reveals Terada's men are allied with him and has them restrain Terada. Before Jingu can kill anyone, Yumi reveals a bomb which she intends to destroy Jingu's money with, forcing him to stand down briefly. Makoto Date appears in a helicopter and orders Jingu's arrest. Jingu's men shoot at Date's helicopter and order every witnesses to be killed. Despite the help of his many henchmen, Jingu is ultimately defeated by Kiryu.

Jingu is able to stand up and stumble towards the vault containing his money after Kiryu subdues Nishikiyama inside Ares. Upon arrival, Jingu shoots Kiryu in the leg before Yumi can detonate the bomb. Haruka stands in front of him to protect him; Jingu fires at her, but Yumi takes the bullet. As Jingu is about to execute Kiryu, Nishikiyama arises and stabs Jingu with a knife, Jingu repeatedly shooting him in retaliation. Nishikiyama then shoots the bomb, detonating it and killing both himself and Jingu, and scattering Jingu's money onto the streets of Kamurocho.

Fighting Style[]

Jingu is an extremely cowardly pistol wielder. He will ocassionally shoot his pistol at Kiryu, run away using Arase's running animation to try to keep some distance between himself and Kiryu, throw grenades, and taunt with a laugh. Most of his moves are copied from Tamashiro's gun phase from Yakuza 3, but his evade attacks are copied from Baba/Hayashi.

Trivia[]

  • During the credits of Yakuza 0, it is stated that Sera's "political connections" contribute to the stable hold he has over the Tojo Clan. This is an allusion to Jingu, as is revealed in Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami.

Notes[]

  1. Credited as "Mister N"
  2. In Yakuza 2/Yakuza Kiwami 2, it is revealed that the specific faction of the Omi Alliance that Jingu had collaborated with is the Go-Ryu Clan. Jingu states that he had been in talks with the 5th chairman of the Omi Alliance, who would have been Jin Goda. However, Ryo Takashima clarifies that it was Ryuji Goda of the Go-Ryu Clan who had been allying with Jingu behind Jin's back. This is not given clarification; it could be that Ryuji had deceived Jingu, or that Jin had initially made the partnership but called it off later, only for Ryuji to continue it.
