Kyohei Hamura (羽村 京平, Hamura Kyōhei) is a secondary antagonist in Judgment. He is the captain of the Matsugane Family, but due to his financial influence over the family, he is effectively in full control of it.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Hamura has black slicked-back hair going slightly gray. He has a tall build.

Attire[]

Hamura wears a two-piece white suit over a black dress shirt, a white leather belt with a gold buckle, and a pair of black crocodile leather bit loafers with gold buckles. He has a Matsugane Family crest lapel pin in the lapel of his suit.

Sometimes, including while gambling, Hamura wears a two-piece stand white tracksuit with black and gold paisley patterned stripe that runs from the shoulders down the sleeves. The sleeves of his jacket are rolled up, his jacket has a stand up collar, and he wears a black undershirt. He wears a gold watch on his left wrist.

Personality[]

I'm gonna make this painful!

— Hamura to Yagami

Hamura appears to be a violent egotist, valuing force over reason and doing whatever it took to make the Matsugane Family successful. This makes him not above carrying out the unsavory aspects of being a yakuza, which he does gleefully. He also dislikes challenges to his power and seeks to eliminate them by any means, such as organizing a robbery of his own family's office, then pinning the blame on a rival in order to eliminate a key check on his control over the family. Hamura displays sadistic tendencies, as he mocks Higashi, to whom he often displayed bullying behavior, by telling him his screams "turn him on", or when he waved a needle in Yagami's face and joked about gouging out his eyes. He is also a smug man, often taunting Yagami and his allies, and being uncooperative even in situations where he himself might benefit.

This cruel, unsightly exterior conceals a deep-seated respect for his patriarch. Hamura's affinity towards Matsugane underpins his desire to make the family stable. This implies that at one point, Hamura was a much more noble person. Indeed, when first prompted by the Mole, he was reluctant to commit murders, only doing so as it would keep the family afloat and he did not want to see his patriarch disgraced. His respect for his boss eventually causes him to lose his self-interested and uncooperative streak, as he helps Yagami and Kaito solve the Mole murder case - even though he knew it would cost him his freedom.

Hamura commands a great deal of respect from his subordinates, as they twice demonstrate their loyalty by rescuing him from extremely dangerous situations.

Background[]

SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for Judgment follow. (Skip)

Around 1998, Hamura met an informant, who would later be known as the Mole. Hamura and the Mole eventually became partners for various crimes. Once Hamura became captain of the Matsugane Family, he would mostly use the Mole to dispose of dead bodies, whom he described as being able to "[...] dispose of a corpse like it was the easiest damn thing in the world". Eventually the Mole told Hamura he was ready to start taking hits, to which Hamura agreed to help find clients solely for a cut of the money.

Their first hit wouldn't be long, as Hamura was approached by Ishimatsu, who had their very first client ready for them; lead researcher of the ADDC, Yoji Shono. Following the first hit, Ishimatsu took a shine to the duo, and proposes a partnership to Hamura, which would later end up resulting in the conspiracy surrounding AD-9. Hamura becomes suspicious and agitated over the proposed job, but eventually gives in to the partnership.

In 2017, Hamura hatched a plan to get Masaharu Kaito expelled from the Matsugane Family, as Kaito's power in the family was threatening Hamura's status as captain. Hamura hired a homeless man known as Red Nose to partake in the scheme, which was to stage a robbery in the Matsugane Family office while Kaito is alone in there. The staged robbery seemingly goes exactly as to plan. Following the crime, Hamura alongside Ozaki start paying Red Nose for the crime, however, Higashi managed to track down the three. Hamura then kills Red Nose and forces Higashi into joining his side.

Takayuki Yagami's initial encounter with Hamura

Hamura is initially suspected of murdering a Kyorei Clan yakuza, following an altercation between himself and two lesser Kyorei Clan members at Club Amour. The charges are successfully overturned by Masamichi Shintani, a lawyer from the Genda Law Office, along with the help of Takayuki Yagami.

Following his acquittal, Hamura warns Yagami to not to dig deeper about the case. With Yagami's refusal to drop the case, Hamura resorts to beating down Yagami at Cafe Alps. Yagami narrowly escapes death at the hands of Hamura and Kengo thanks to a masked man's interference. He orders Toru Higashi to raid Yagami's office in another attempt to intimidate him into backing down.

In an attempt to get back at Hamura for his suspected part in the Kyorei Clan murders, a Matsugane family member - thought to be Hamura by the killer - is shot and killed, which prompts Yagami eventually discovers Hamura's current whereabouts: a secret cho-han parlor in the Champion District.

Yagami and Kaito infiltrate the secret cho-han parlor in order to confront Hamura. Within a few minutes of arriving the group find Hamura at a cho-han table. After approaching him, a fight breaks out, resulting in Hamura's defeat. But before Yagami can get any information from him, members of the Matsugane family set the cho-han parlor on fire, snatching their captain before tossing a grenade at Yagami and Kaito. The two manage to duck behind the bar before the explosion and they make their way out of the wreckage.

Yagami and Kaito later attempt to lure out Hamura by having Yagami show up at various Matsugane establishments, knowing full well that they were on the hunt for him. Eventually Hamura makes an appearance, along with Matsugane, an encounter which leads to Kaito being shot, and Yagami forced to infiltrate Matsugane headquarters in order to rescue him. After breaking into the HQ and defeating Hamura; Yagami, Kaito, and Matsugane bring the captain to Honmaruen. It is there that Yagami is able to interrogate Hamura about the Mole, in order to find him and prove Kazuya Ayabe's innocence, and stop the continual murders.

Hamura reveals everything to Yagami about the Mole, save his name. He reveals the Mole's beginnings as a member of the police, being mentored under an informant for the Tojo clan, as well as his involvement in Hashiki's murder. When Yagami was first examining the case, it was Kaito who suggested that the fact that the death didn't look like a hit meant it was done by a professional. Hamura also confirms Yagami's suspicions about the other murders; All of the victims whose eyes were gouged out had been experimented on by Yoji Shono, given a dose of AD-9 regardless of the fact that Shono knew it would kill them.

When the Matsugane Family rescue him at Honmaruen, the Mole appears to try and kill Hamura to silence him, and Mitsugu Matsugane sacrifices himself to save him. Following Matsugane's death and the Mole's escape, Hamura tells Yagami that the Mole is Mitsuru Kuroiwa, then goes into hiding. Days later, having had a change in heart due to Matsugane's sacrifice, Hamura dresses in a black raincoat to lure Yagami to the roof of Yoshida Batting Center where he gives him a phone call as evidence that would incriminate Ichinose.

During Ayabe's trial, Hamura testifies as a witness to confirm the evidence is valid.

Fighting Style[]

Hamura uses Yahata's moveset from Yakuza 5. This includes his 2-hit right hook and left cross combo, his 1-2 jab and cross combo and his right cross. His Deadly Attack is to rush at Yagami and deliver a right uppercut. He has a unique command grab where he grabs his opponent, pummels them twice with his right fist, and uses a front ura nage to slam them. His color of his aura in Judgment is light yellow, and is changed to white with light yellow accents in Judgment Remastered.

He is mostly seen utilizing guns as his primary weapon, as despite his position, he is not particularly strong in hand-to-hand combat. He generally relies on his right hand man Kojiro Ozaki (and to a lesser extent, Kengo) when it comes to combat.

Trivia[]

  • Due to Pierre Taki's drug-related charges, Hamura's model and voice were replaced for the Western release of Judgment and subsequent re-releases.
  • Hamura likely doesn't have a tattoo on his back, as it is prohibited for people with tattoos to enter saunas in Japan.
  • Hamura is mentioned at points in The Kaito Files:
    • In "Memories of Hamura", Kaito examines Hamura's favorite sauna and reflects on how Hamura made him do outlandish tasks when he first joined the Matsugane family. He recalls how Hamura decided to have his men fight in a battle royale out of the blue. The other Matsugane family members ganged up on Kaito, who snapped and went berserk, using a move dubbed the "Matsugane Mixer".
    • In "Memories of an Ex-Pro Wrestler", Kaito examines the building where Hamura held him hostage. He reflects on how Hamura had forced another member out of the Matsugane family before he himself was forced out. The member he forced out was an ex-pro wrestler and Kaito's aniki. He would toss people around like rag dolls when he got drunk and he used the "Human Helicopter" move as his go-to when dealing with drunk customers.
