Tatsuya Ukyo (右京 龍也, Ukyō Tatsuya) is a major character in the Like a Dragon series. He is the protagonist of the spinoffs Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinsho and Kurohyou 2: Ryu ga Gotoku Ashura-hen. Formerly a rowdy youth, he becomes involved with the Tojo Clan as a top fighter in their underground coliseum, Dragon Heat, earning him the ring name, "The Mad Dragon of Kamuro" (神室の狂龍, Kamuro no Kyō ryū).

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Tatsuya has a lean, muscular build from a life fighting in the streets of Kamurocho, having had no formal martial arts training save for judo classes and punching bags. He has black hair that is undercut and slicked backwards, with cornrows on the sides (drawn as bands in the cutscenes).

Attire[]

Tatsuya's street clothes consist of a black track suit with no undershirt, featuring golden side decals along the sleeves and pant legs, and a pair of gold trainers with black soles. His jacket includes an oversized hood, which he pulls up when hiding or in disguise.

Initially, his Dragon Heat ring attire was simply his normal outfit without his jacket, but following his match with Tomoki, he began wearing black shorts with metallic gold trim and a white dragon emblem on the right leg, a pair of black grappling gloves with gold-lined straps, and bare feet.

In Kurohyou 2: Ryu ga Gotoku Ashura-hen, he starts off wearing an army green military jacket zipped halfway up over a dark gray v-neck t-shirt with a white collar, a pair of medium wash distressed jeans, and mid-calf height black combat boots.

Personality[]

You can change your fate with your own strength.

— Tatsuya Ukyo, Kurohyou 2: Ryu ga Gotoku Ashura-hen
SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshō follow. (Skip)

Tatsuya is rude and short-tempered towards most people, only smiling in the presence of his friends or after winning in a fight. He generally ignores others, and due to his time in juvenile detention, is massively resentful towards adults and authority figures, save for his older sister Saeko.

Taizan Amamiya once described Tatsuya as a "wild beast"—preying on those weaker than him, while fleeing from anyone stronger.  He is extremely confrontational, particularly when anyone treats him like a child or suggests he is weak. Despite this, he is aware when he is outmatched, and attempts to flee from both the Chinese mafia and the Kuki Family until he is cornered and forced to fight for his freedom in Dragon Heat.

In school, Tatsuya was a violent bully who fought with both his classmates and teachers. He displayed sadistic and abusive tendencies, gloating over beaten foes and lashing out at anyone who irritated him, even his closest friends. This leaves him a misanthropic loner by the time he runs afoul of the Tojo Clan.

As Dragon Heat pits him against those he has wronged in the past, Tatsuya matures as both a fighter and a person, learning to atone for his mistakes and sympathize with the struggles of others. Along with befriending the Dragon Heat staff, he reconciles with his sister Saeko, his best friend Tenma, and his fellow fighters. He also begins to enjoy the fame and spectacle of Dragon Heat, and learns to find meaning in martial arts beyond just fighting to win.

Background[]

At two years old, in 1995, Tatsuya was orphaned as a result of a fire that broke out in Kamurocho's Champion District, and his mother was killed in the incident. He was then taken into the Ukyo family along with his older sister Saeko for the following nine years, eventually moving out to Kamurocho with her when she became a hostess. He eventually became a violent delinquent and bully, culminating in him getting arrested in 2008 after being accused of beating a classmate to the point of hospitalization following a schoolyard fight. Tatsuya was arrested by Shozo Takenaka and sent to juvenile detention for a year. Following his release, he dropped out of high school and became a street thug, doing part-time jobs and picking fights with other gangs.

After his stint fighting at Dragon Heat, in 2011, he took up on an opportunity to fight in underground boxing matches in Las Vegas as part of the build-up to his professional boxing debut.

Now acting as an improved version of Pankration, Professional Wrestling and Lucha, this style has powerful combos, extremely good grabs and very low chance of being knocked down. Somewhat based on Bone Crusher's style from Def Jam: Fight for NY and Briggs' style from Def Jam Vendetta. Unlocked by having Pankration at level 10.

Blue Heat: "Head Crash" - Tatsuya grabs the enemy's face and slams it into the ground.

Red Heat: "Octopus Submission" - Tatsuya crawls onto the enemy's torso to break their right arm in a triangular choke, then forces them to the ground to break their arm sideways, and finally hugs their body and twists himself so that their neck and torso are destroyed.

Extreme Instant Death[]

Original name: 瞬撃の極み, Shungeki no Kiwami

Replacing Extreme Flexibility, this style functionally acts as the ultimate form of Karate focusing on short, powerful attacks, but the majority of its moves are taken from Kurohyou's Kakuto Bujutsu. This is a brutal style based on the principle of relentless, constant attack. It is somewhat based on Taido, which is a more acrobatic and adaptive version of Karate. Unlocked by having Karate at level 10.

Style skills: +4 deathblow charge, +4 Beastly Blazing Power, +3 endurance

Blue Heat: Karate's Red Heat Action, "Triple Meridian Strike".

Red Heat: "Sky-Rending Riotous Dance" - Tatsuya does a right reverse overhead wheel kick, then jumps upon his opponent's shoulders and elbows their collarbone, then jumps down and knees their face, and finally leaps into the air, positions himself atop his opponent's shoulder and pushes them onto the ground, breaking their arm in the process.

Extreme Wild Dance[]

Original name: 乱舞の極み, Ranbu no Kiwami

Still functioning as the ultimate form of Chinese Martial Arts, but now significantly improved upon; it is now a style with long combos going up to an astonishing 20 hits, both punch and kick. It is based on Tang Lang Quan instead of Zui Quan like Kurohyou's Wild Dance. Unlocked by having Chinese Martial Arts at level 10.

Style skills: enhanced quick attack, Numb To Pain (Head), +4 Guard Breaker

Blue Heat: Chinese Kenpo's Red Heat Action, "Lightning Flash".

Red Heat: "Iron Mountain Slam" - Tatsuya does a left palm strike, a right elbow strike and finishes with a tetsuzanko.

Extreme God Leg[]

Original name: 神脚の極み, Kami-ashi no Kiwami

This style is no longer the ultimate form of Karate, now being an alternate version of Extreme God Hand. Significantly altered from its Kurohyou counterpart, now no longer having any kicks associated with the punch button and sporting up to 15-hit combos on the kick button. It now has no Capoeira, being entirely based on Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai. Unlocked by having both Karate and Chinese Martial Arts at level 5.

Style skills: enhanced heavy attack, Savage Blow (Leg), Numb To Pain (Leg)

Blue Heat: Muay Thai's Red Heat Action, "Clinch Knee From Hell".

Red Heat: "Back-Blow Kick Combo" - Tatsuya does a left backfist, two left side kicks and finishes with a right roundhouse kick delivered so forcefully the opponent cartwheels twice before falling to the ground.

Extreme God Hand[]

Original name: 剛腕の極み, Gōwan no Kiwami

Once again the ultimate form of Boxing. Significantly altered from its Kurohyou counterpart, now no longer having any punches associated with the kick button and sporting up to 15-hit combos on the punch button. Also has good grabs and counters. It is, like in Kurohyou, based on boxing, wrestling and brawling. Unlocked by having both Pankration and Karate at level 5.

Style skills: +4 counter window, Savage Blow (Arm), Numb To Pain (Arm)

Blue Heat: Boxing's Red Heat Action, "Octopus Mount Punch".

Red Heat: "Grizzly Rush" - Tatsuya brutally punches the opponent's head at great speed and roars after knocking them to the ground.

Extreme Awakening[]

Original name: 覚醒の極み, Kakusei no Kiwami

Functionally the same as Kurohyou's Extreme Awakening: the ultimate form of Brawling and Military Martial Arts with incredible Heat gain, great combos and maximum weapon damage, though the actual movements are completely different, now being more focused on a mix of brawling, Muay Thai and wrestling. Also grants infinite stamina. Unlocked by having both Pankration and Chinese Martial Arts at level 5.

Style skills: +4 Heat gain, infinite stamina, Savage Blow (Weapon)

Blue Heat: The same as Kurohyou - "Wild Bite".

Red Heat: "Dragon Impact Choke" - Tatsuya delivers a left jab and a right cross to the opponent's head, a left push kick and a right knee to their torso, then grabs them and flips them over to break their neck, and finally jumps over backwards to slam them into the ground.

Extreme Man[]

Extreme Man・ Taizan[]

Original name: 極めし者・泰山, Kiwameshimono・Taizan
