Yosuke Tendo (天童 陽介, Tendō Yōsuke) is a secondary antagonist in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. He is a lieutenant of the Omi Alliance and the patriarch of the Ryudo Family.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Tendo is intimidatingly tall with an extremely muscular build. He has a slicked back, dark brown, short pompadour with sideburns; and a thin mustache.

Tattoo[]

Blue Dragon (7)

Tendo's dragon tattoo

Tendo's tattoo depicts a deep blue Azure DragonWP, or "Seiryu," with red accents. It is surrounded by fire and water, and is clutching a pearl in one of its claws. The Azure Dragon symbolizes wisdom and patience as virtues of strength. The fire and water accompanying the Seiryu are a combination unique to his tattoo, representing action and flexibility respectively. The creature appears to have carp fins along its body, indicating that it was a koi that has recently transformed into a dragon. The pearl takes the shape of a dark gray swirl, the same color as the water. This could indicate the glory Tendo seeks will ultimately prove for nothing.

Attire[]

Tendo's attire consists of three-piece pinstriped green suit over charcoal gray shirt and magenta tie with Omi Alliance insignia, a matching pair of suit pants, and a pair of white leather shoes.

Personality[]

Compared to Ishioda, Tendo is also ambitious, but is far more calculating with his actions. Despite being a former boxer, he prefers strategy to fisticuffs, often planning his schemes in advance while waiting for the right time to strike. This makes him not above betrayal and conspiracy, as evidenced by his role in the dissolution of the Omi Alliance; Tendo is capable of acting in a friendly manner towards those he despises, gaining their trust while secretly plotting their demise. He also carries a sense of entitlement about him, remarking that Masumi Arakawa "stole his rightful seat" [as Acting Captain of the Omi], suggesting that he sees his place in society as being at the top.

Tendo's cynicism underlines his actions, as he believes that in life, values like loyalty are utterly meaningless and all that matters is gaining power over others. This puts him in stark contrast to Ichiban Kasuga who steadfastly stands by those who offer him their support, no matter the consequences.

Towards authority figures, like Aoki, Tendo is assertive, making his personal boundaries clear as well as setting his own terms at the negotiating table.

He also has a bit of sadism within him; He remarks that the last thing Arakawa saw was his beaming smile, and shows notable glee when putting on a pair of brass knuckles when fighting Kasuga.

Background[]

In another life, Tendo was a highly successful heavyweight boxer, winning championship after championship. This secured him significant fame, as well as a sizeable fortune. However, he eventually showed his dark side by accepting an offer to fix a match. When the fixers failed to pay, Tendo beat them to death, which resulted in a major scandal that caused him to leave his boxing career. Looking for another chance at the top, he joined the yakuza, eventually becoming an officer and top fighter for the Omi Alliance.

Involvement[]

Yakuza: Like a Dragon: 2019[]

Tendo first appears at the dinner between Omi officers. He witnesses Ichiban Kasuga barge in only to be shot by the Omi's Acting Captain, Masumi Arakawa.

Much later, alongside fellow Omi officer Reiji Ishioda, Tendo observes Akira Mabuchi, an Omi loyalist in the Yokohama Liumang, attempting to defeat the leader of the Liumang, Tianyou Zhao. After Mabuchi is subdued by Zhao, Kasuga, and their allies, Tendo introduces himself to the party and leaves. Due to his background as a boxer, he appears to be recognized by some of the party.

When Omi Captain Masaru Watase is freed from prison, Tendo is present at the ceremony to welcome him back, where he once again meets Kasuga's party and Arakawa. When Watase announces the dissolution of the Omi Alliance (alongside Arakawa and several of their allies in the dissolved Tojo Clan), Tendo surprises everyone present by choosing to fight alongside Watase and his allies, stating he does not want to miss the brawl of a lifetime. He hides his ulterior motive of creating a power vacuum which he could leverage to gain power and rise to the top.

The resulting power vacuum enables the formation of a splinter faction that is created after the Omi's dissolution; the Tokyo Omi Alliance, which Tendo and the Ryudo Family are absorbed into. Now loyal to Ryo Aoki, Tendo then beats Ishioda to assassinating Arakawa in order to eliminate a rival and regain his favor with the splinter faction and Aoki. Later, after Ishioda and Mirror Face fail to subdue Kasuga and his party, Tendo and Aoki order one of Tendo's subordinates to detonate a bomb in Ishioda's office. While Kasuga, his party and Mirror Face manage to escape and survive, Ishioda's fate is unknown.

Later, Aoki sends Tendo to search the Arakawa Family office in the Millennium Tower after Kasuga bluffs Aoki into believing there may be an incriminating recording in the office. There, he fights Kasuga and his party. Tendo proudly admits to his murder of Kasuga's biological father to goad him. After an intense battle, Tendo is defeated and subdued by the party. Then, Mirror Face - who had switched loyalties to Kasuga's party after Tendo's attempted assassination of him - impersonates Tendo and hides his body.

Kasuga's party then pretends to be knocked out. When Aoki and his men arrive, Mirror Face, impersonating Tendo, talks as though he has defeated the party, and thus fools Aoki into admitting he had desired them killed. Joongi Han had been secretly recording Aoki, and shares this video over the internet, ultimately ruining his political career and public image.

Afterwards, Tendo is arrested for the murder of Masumi Arakawa, and the Tokyo Omi Alliance's fate is left uncertain.

Fighting Style[]

A former boxer of tremendous power and imposing stature, Tendo exclusively uses punches and long combos. A reflection of his personality, Tendo resorts to underhanded tactics such as the use of brass knuckles and punches to the heart, presumably causing cardiac arrest.

His moveset consists of:

  • His basic attack, a left jab followed by a right hook
  • Royal Beatdown, a right uppercut-left uppercut-right haymaker combo
  • Relentless Finish, a sidestep followed by the Royal Beatdown combo
  • Dragon's Descent, a hype-up, which comes in 2 variations: one where Tendo frantically circles his arms and glows yellow, and another where he takes a blocking stance and glows purple
  • Dragon Dance, a more powerful version of Royal Beatdown unleashed from a golden Dragon's Descent
  • Dragon's Maw, a long combo of a left uppercut, a right haymaker, a left haymaker, a right uppercut and a right juggling uppercut unleashed from a purple Dragon's Descent
  • Devil's Awakening, where Tendo raises his left arm
  • Devil's Left Wing, an extremely powerful left gut punch
  • God's Warning, where Tendo raises his right arm
  • God's Right Hand, an extremely powerful right haymaker aimed to the heart which may instantly kill any party member it is used upon

Royal Beatdown is always followed by Relentless Finish, regardless of turn order, and Tendo can also take an extra turn if the party's Agility is insufficient, potentially performing 4 or more total actions before the party is able to act. His aura in the first phase is gold, and in the second phase it is purple. He is adorned by the silhouette of dragon scales while his aura is summoned.

After Dragon's Descent, Devil's Awakening, and God's Warning, if he does not take an extra turn and he takes at least 2,200 total damage (more on Hard and Legend) before his next turn, the aura will disappear and the follow-up attack will not come out. God's Right Hand cannot be guarded or perfect guarded if the one-hit kill would activate, but equipping a Curse Substitute completely nullifies the effect, while Peerless Resolve from Kasuga's Hero class and True Grit from Adachi's Detective class will negate it once and disappear. It can also be evaded occasionally with sufficient Dexterity or an evasion boost.

Tendo has an extreme resistance to Blunt damage, a minor resistance to Slash, Firearm, and non-elemental Magic damage, and has no resistance to Magic Fire or Magic Ice. His only weakness is Magic Lightning, which is accessible from Kasuga's Essence of Orbital Laser, any Enforcer's Essence of Electromagnetic Storm, and Fulminating Forecast from any Fortuneteller, current or former.

  1. The given height of 195 cm (6′ 5″) is based on the character model's scaling factor within Yakuza: Like a Dragon's data.[1] For Dragon Engine games, this method is believed to be very accurate (±2 cm). However, this is intended as an estimate, not a substitute for an official statistic.
