Joongi Han (한준기, Han Jun-gi/ハン・ジュンギ, Han Jungi), previously known as Mumyeong (무명, Mumyeong/ムミョン, Mumyon, Lit. "Unnamed"), is a character featured in Ryu Ga Gotoku Online. He is the earliest Jingweon Mafia member known to have assumed the identity of Joongi Han.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Han is a considerably stylish person. He has bleached hair, brown eyes and wears a grey coat. He is also seen sporting considerably thick eyeliner.
Personality[]
Han is an exceedingly formal person, speaking in courtesy Japanese to everyone he meets, regardless of his relationship to them. The only times when his facade of politeness breaks is when he becomes irritated by Ryuji Goda's inability to remember his full name.
Background[]
Han was once an orphan in Seoul, who struggled desperately to survive. He recounts an incident where, as a young teen, he stole a carrot from a shop, but was caught and beaten by the owner.
At a later point in time, he was recruited by the Jingweon Mafia and underwent the surgery to become Joongi Han.
Involvement[]
Ryu Ga Gotoku Online: 1999[]
In 1999, Han is sent to Japan by the Jingweon Mafia headquarters in Korea with a mission. The Jingweon have recently learned that the Ryuji Goda, the long lost son of their former leader, has been expelled from the Omi Alliance, so they want to recruit him into the Jingweon in the hopes that he'll be of use for their plans to re-start operations in Japan. Han's goal is to find Ryuji and get him to meet with the Jingweon's current boss in Korea.
Unfortunately for Han, after his expulsion, Ryuji started aimlessly wandering through Japan on a motorcycle trip, so it takes him a couple of weeks to track him down to Sapporo. Upon finding him, Han tells Ryuji that his biological father was a member of the Jingweon and invites him to meet with the current leader, telling him that if he aids in their plan to regain power in Japan, he could become a powerful officer within their organization. However, Ryuji isn't interested, since after trying out Sapporo's famous miso katsu dish, he wants to try famous regional dishes from every major city in Japan. Since he has orders to not return to Korea without Ryuji, Han joins him on his road trip, in the hopes of persuading him over time.
The duo's first stop is in Nagoya, where Ryuji wants to try their famous sweet ogura toast. Ryuji's presence in Nagoya immediately draws the attention of the Nagoya Family, who do not allow yakuza from other cities into their territory. Throughout their stay in town, Han and Ryuji are constantly accosted by masked thugs sent by the Nagoya Family to drive them away.
While sleeping in a park because Ryuji does not want to pay for a hotel, the pair run into Tatsuo Shinada, who is also sleeping in the park. Ryuji recognizes Shinada from his infamous major league debut (which, unbeknownst to Ryuji, resulted in his permanent banning from the sport due to charges of game-fixing) and asks him for an autograph. However, Shinada mistakes Ryuji's request for mockery and angrily rebuffs him. Ryuji tries to insist, but Han stops him. The pair get into an argument that results in a fight, which is only stopped when a police officer confronts them and forces them to run away. The following night, Ryuji borrows some money from Han to get the ogura toast (which he finds too sweet for his taste) and then decides to visit a local cabaret club. An annoyed Han waits outside the club for three hours while Ryuji parties. When Ryuji leaves the club, he and Han are confronted by a mob of Nagoya Family thugs. The pair are forced to fight their way past dozens of men, before finally fleeing town.
The next stop on Ryuji's gourmet tour takes him and Han to Hiroshima, where Ryuji wants to try their okonomiyaki. The pair have lunch at a bayside restaurant in Onomichi, where Ryuji makes a bet with Han: If Han tries some of the okonomiyaki and doesn't like it, he'll go to Korea with him, but if he does like it, then Han has to drink with Ryuji. Han promptly loses the bet and gets drunk with Ryuji, finally letting the pair have a friendly conversation.
However, the pair's meal is interrupted when they're attacked by Go-Ryu Clan men led by Wataru Takayama, one of the Go-Ryu's lieutenants, whom Jin Goda has appointed as his successor. Takayama tells Ryuji that, while his father has made it clear that he does not intend to reverse Ryuji's expulsion, Takayama wants to kill Ryuji anyway to make sure that he'll never be able to come back to the clan and pose a threat to his chance at the Go-Ryu patriarch seat. During the ensuing battle, Han takes a bullet for Ryuji, since he couldn't let him be killed before taking him to Korea. With Han injured, the pair are forced to flee. After narrowly avoiding their pursuers, Ryuji takes Han to the home of Heizo Iwami, Chairman of the local yakuza powerhouse the Yomei Alliance, since Takayama said that he had Iwami's approval to kill Ryuji in his territory. Ryuji brokers a deal with Iwami, telling him that if he rescinds Takayama's permission and gets Han the treatment he needs, Ryuji will owe him a favor, which he can call on anytime after Ryuji's regained his position within the Omi.
After Han recovers, the pair continue their journey by traveling to Fukuoka so Ryuji can try their motosunabe and tonkotsu ramen. After eating at a restaurant in Nagasugai, Ryuji and Han are once again attacked, except this time their aggressors are Ichiban Kasuga and Daisaku Kuze of the Tojo Clan, who have been sent to kill them to prevent an alliance between the Omi and the Jingweon. The fight between the four men is interrupted when Takayama and his thugs show up as well, forcing Ryuji and Han to split up to try to lose their enemies. Han evades Kasuga, who was the only one who chased after him, and then gets in contact with his commanding officer in the Jingweon to request back up from any other operatives in the area. However, Han's superior tells him that no back-up will come, because his orders have changed. The Jingweon Officer tells Han that the Tojo learning about their attempt to recruit Ryuji threatens to cause a war between the Jingweon and Tojo, which the Jingweon are currently in no condition to fight. Because of that, Han's new mission is to kill Ryuji, as a sign to the Tojo that they don't want conflict.
Han finds Ryuji surrounded by Takayama and his men at a nearby bridge and, despite the fact that he's come to like Ryuji during their travels, Han still pulls a gun on him to comply with his orders. An amused Takayama allows Han to be the one to kill Ryuji, but Han finds that he can't follow through. Ultimately, a seemingly impatient Kasuga takes Han's gun and shoots Ryuji instead before pushing him off the bridge and into the river. Immediately, Han is remorseful but buries these feelings and prepares to reunite his with boss to receive further instructions. Unbeknownst to Han and Takayama, Kasuga had only wounded Ryuji and then pushed him into the river so that he could later retrieve him and take him to a doctor, since he'd decided to disobey the Tojo's orders to execute him.
Soon after Ryuji's alleged death, Han's immediate superior in the Jingweon forges an alliance with Takayama. The Go-Ryu lieutenant believes that Jin Goda has grown too soft and complacent in his old age, so he wants to usurp his position as Chairman. In exchange for their support in his coup, Takayama pledged to the Jingweon that he would then join them in a combined effort to destroy the Tojo Clan and take over Tokyo. Han is instructed to participate in the coup but, when the time comes, he feels too much remorse for allowing Ryuji to be killed, so he betrays the Jingweon and helps Jin escape as atonement.
Takayama and the Jingweon track Han and Chairman Goda to Sotenbori and try to kill them both. However, Ryuji, Kasuga and Kuze arrive and interrupt the assassination attempt. Combining their forces, Ryuji, Han, Kasuga and Kuze defeat the treacherous lieutenant and his Korean allies, but Han is shot and critically injured by his former boss during the scuffle. Despite this, Ryuji manages to get him to a doctor and saves his life once again.
A few weeks later, once Han has recovered from his bullet wound and Ryuji has been reinstated into the Go-Ryu Clan, the pair meet once again to eat takoyaki together. Ryuji offers Han a position in the Go-Ryu, since he's now been named as his father's successor and will soon take control of the Clan, but Han turns him down. The former Jingweon man says he wants to travel the world outside Japan, but promises to return and see Ryuji whenever possible. The two friends finish their meal and part on good terms.
