Joongi Han[note 3] (한준기, Han Jun-gi/ハン・ジュンギ, Han Jungi) is a major antagonist in Yakuza 6. He is the second known Jingweon Mafia member to have assumed the identity of Joongi Han and is the leader of its Japanese Branch. He is also the proprietor of Stardust.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Han is a considerably stylish person. He has bleached white hair, brown eyes, a muscular build, and wears thick eyeliner. He wears his hair in a slicked back side part hairstyle.
Attire[]
Han wears two gold chain necklaces around his neck and a black paisley print blazer with a gold and blue patterned scarf underneath. His blazer is unbuttoned and he wears no shirt underneath. He also wears navy blue suit slacks, a black leather belt with a silver buckle, and blue leather loafers.
Personality[]
Han appears as a man with good manners that match his looks. Both seductive and charismatic; he is very popular with the women of Kamurocho which helps fuel his venture. Han also has a knack for business, being able to rapidly expand the Jingweon's business in Japan by basing their operations around the under-served female-centered sex industry. On the other hand, he's also a cruel and moody person; maiming his subordinates on a whim when he feels they've embarrassed or disgraced him.
Unlike his elders in the Jingweon Mafia, Han is not devoted to the group's iron creed of "death before dishonor", being more focused on turning the Jingweon into a powerful, profitable criminal organization than on taking revenge against those who've wronged them, showing his ambition and foresight. Despite this more pragmatic approach, he does harbor a strong hatred for Kazuma Kiryu because he believes that the Jingweon will never be able to move on from the humiliations he subjected them to until he is dead.
Han generally shows himself as a refined man with an eye for taste, being able to recognize that of the former owners of Stardust, while pointing out their flaws. In stark contrast to his outwardly mannerisms, Han embraces the depravity of his business, by having his clients and hosts don masks, he allows them to engage on their desires in full under the veil of secrecy, despite finding it unsightly. At the same time, he's a man of honor and sportmanship, as he challenged Kiryu in a proper one-on-one match with no tricks and was infuriated at his men taking Yuta hostage, demanding his release, while also ordering his venue to congratulate Kiryu for his victory, offering a respectful handshake, while honoring his earlier promise. Even then his defeat at Kiryu's hands, greatly infuriated him and made him pursue more extreme and drastic measures in order to fight him.
Background[]
As a child, Han grew up in a poor and neglected environment.
Han took on the identity of Joongi Han at an undetermined point after 1999 and, at some point prior to 2015, he secured permission from his superiors in the Jingweon to re-start the organization's Japanese branch. Through this Japanese branch, Han intended to transform the Jingweon, hoping to abandon their preoccupation with the "iron code" and instead turn them into a more pragmatic criminal enterprise, more concerned with making money than loyalty and revenge. During this time, Han was offered tribute by an older member of the Jingweon; his son, Yeonsu Kim, surgically altered to appear like Han. Han accepted Yeonsu as his body double, and formed a close friendship with him.
To secure money for the expansion of the new Japanese branch, Han had the Jingweon do mercenary work for Tsuneo Iwami, the CEO of Iwami Shipbuilding and son of Yomei Alliance chairman Heizo Iwami. Using the capital acquired through this dirty work, Han began to buy up businesses in Tokyo's nightlife scene and began to change them to cater to what he perceived as an underserved niche: sex work for women. In particular, Han had the Jingweon buy the host club Stardust and use it to offer male striptease performances on top of the regular host service, turning it into their most profitable venture.
Eventually, Tsuneo hired Han and his crew to assassinate the leader of the Saio Triad, Big Lo, and his son, Jimmy Lo, as they stood in the way of Tsuneo's machinations for power. The Jingweon succeeded in killing Jimmy but failed to kill his father, earning Tsuneo and all his proxies Lo's wrath. As they'd botched the job, Tsuneo demanded that the Jingweon complete their mission properly if they wished to retain his patronage. Since Tsuneo's contract work was one of the Jingweon's biggest sources of income, Han began to desperately seek out a way of locating and killing Lo, who had started moving around Tokyo in secrecy or under heavy guard to avoid further attempts on his life.
In early 2016, Han was approached by Shu Tatsukawa, a Saio infiltrator in the Yomei Alliance who wanted to desert the triad. In exchange for Tsuneo's protection, Tatsukawa offered to provide information that could be used to kill Lo. Tatsukawa had discovered that Yuta Usami, who was secretly Lo's second son and now heir, had fathered a son with Haruka Sawamura. Tatsukawa proposed that he and the Jingweon could take Haruka and her son hostage and use them to extort Yuta into killing Lo for them. Since Yuta was now Lo's heir given the death of his eldest son, Lo would surely meet with Yuta with his guard down.
Tatsukawa arranged a meeting with Haruka, who knew him back from her time in Hiroshima. However, during their meeting, Haruka suspected that Tatsukawa was up to something sinister and fled after temporarily incapacitating him with a knee to the groin. Han witnessed Haruka running from the parking lot where she'd met Tatsukawa and he prepared to go after her, but he was interrupted when Tatsukawa sped out of the parking lot in his car at such speed that he drove into oncoming traffic, swerved to avoid it and ended up running over Haruka. After seeing this, Han presumed the girl and the baby dead, but in reality they'd survived, with Haruka left in a coma and her baby left uninjured because she'd shielded him with her body.
Involvement[]
Yakuza 6: 2016[]
Soon after Haruka's hit and run, Kazuma Kiryu returns to Kamurocho alongside Tsuyoshi Nagumo and Yuta Usami. The trio are searching for Tatsukawa, since they believe he might be the father of Haruka's baby, Haruto. The trio know Tatsukawa had been a host while in Kamurocho, so they go to Stardust to inquire, only to be kicked out by one of Han's men. Later, while the trio are having lunch at Kanrai, Han arrives accompanied by the bouncer who kicked them out. After introducing himself, he grabs his underling by the back of the head and shoves his face into the yakiniku grill on the group's table, severely maiming him. Han apologizes for his lackey's "discourtesy" by inviting them to visit the club, offering to answer their questions about Tatsukawa once there.
The group later visit Stardust, where Han shows them the more risqué, sex industry services they now provide. Han also expresses that, while a lot of the Jingweon Mafia still hate Kiryu for his role in their humiliation in 2006, he considers their past "water under the bridge" and hopes to lead his group into a new era unconcerned with avenging old grudges. As a sign of that, Han proposes that he and Kiryu have a symbolic "final battle" between the Tojo and the Jingweon, to be viewed by the club's patrons for their entertainment. In exchange, Han offers to give them Tatsukawa's address. Kiryu initially refuses, so Yuta offers to fight Han instead but gets easily beaten by his stronger, better trained opponent. Kiryu then steps into the ring and faces off with Han, ultimately defeating him.
Once Kiryu has beaten Han, the audience is completely silent, since the club's patrons favored Han. Angered by their boss' defeat, a pair Jingweon goons take Yuta hostage at knifepoint, only for Han to scream at them and demand that they let Yuta go, since Kiryu defeated him fairly and reneging on their deal would be "disgraceful". Han also demands that the audience applaud Kiryu for his victory, just as they would've applauded him had he won. The defeated Jingweon boss tells a surprised Kiryu that he believes "A man accepts defeat with grace" and offers to shake his hand, which Kiryu hesitantly does. After cleaning up, Han gives Kiryu Tatsukawa's address as promised and also tells him that Tatsukawa was connected to the Saio Triad, though he doesn't reveal how he knows this. Once Kiryu and Yuta depart, Han is left alone, at which point he drops his facade of gracefulness and smashes a whiskey glass in anger.
Several days later, when Han learns of Haruto's survival of the car crash, he leads several of his men on a mission to Hiroshima, intent on kidnapping him and using him to extort Yuta into killing Lo. Han and his men find Kiryu, Haruto and the Hirose Family gathered at Ryunan Shrine in Onomichi, right after they have learned the truth about Haruto and Yuta's parentages. The Hirose Family scramble to escape with Haruto before the Jingweon can take him while Kiryu fights off as many of the thugs as he can, including having a rematch with Han. Eventually, one of Han's men informs him that they've managed to steal the baby from the fleeing Hirose Family, so Han retreats.
Han and his men attempt to flee from Hiroshima by boat, but the Hirose Family use their contacts in the Coast Guard to pursue them, eventually forcing the Jingweon men to land in a cargo barge island off the coast and hide there to avoid the authorities. Kiryu and the Hirose Family arrive soon after and they fight their way through Han's goons to get to him. As the rescuers approach Han, he calls Kiryu to deliver an offer to him: If Yuta uses his blood relation to meet with Lo and kill him, then Haruto will be returned unharmed. However, if they refuse and continue to pursue Han within the cargo barge island, he will kill the child. Kiryu refuses to comply and instead tells Han that he will go after him alone, offering him a fight to the death so he won't kill Haruto, to which Han agrees.
Kiryu makes it to the part of the island where Han is waiting. During their confrontation, Han tells Kiryu the truth about his group's mercenary work for Tsuneo, including their failed hit on Big Lo and the botched kidnapping attempt that accidentally left Haruka in a coma. Han says that the Jingweon Mafia will never be able to move on with Kiryu alive, so he will now kill Kiryu to "settle [their] quarrel". The two men fight for a third time and, just like the two previous ones, Kiryu defeats Han. After his defeat, a humbled Han tells Kiryu that Tsuneo will stop at nothing to kill Lo and to uncover the secret of Onomichi, since he needs to do both to ensure his plans to usurp his father come to fruition. When Kiryu asks him about the secret of Onomichi, Han begins to explain what he knows, but he is suddenly shot dead by a mysterious gunman hiding in the shadows.
Fighting Style[]
Han is fought three times throughout Yakuza 6. He is a flashy, proficient boxer who relies solely on punch attacks, especially uppercuts, and frequent quickstepping.
He has four combos, which include:
- one consisting of a left uppercut, a right uppercut, and a left uppercut;
- a left jab-right cross combo,
- another combo consisting of a left uppercut, a right body hook, and a left uppercut (2nd fight onward); and
- a combo made up of a lunging left jab, a right cross, a left body hook, and an overhand right (3rd fight only).
The rest of his moveset is listed below:
- a left uppercut,
- a ducking double forearm strike,
- a hopping right uppercut, which can stun Kiryu;
- quickstep attacks, including:
- frontstepping and performing Daisaku Kuze's front quickstep attack (unused), and
- sidestepping right/left and performing Kuze's right/left quickstep attacks respectively (3rd fight only);
- a command grab where he punches Kiryu in the face three times before throwing him to the ground (Heat Mode only),
- letting his left arm hang limp and looking to the side before throwing an overhand right command grab, followed by a rapid left jab-right cross-left jab-right cross;
- a kneeling right shovel hook as a downed attack, and
- Naoki Katsuya's taunt.
Han also has an alternate stance where he leans over and lets arms hang down, in which he can duck and weave around incoming blows and perform follow-up attacks; however, he does not use said stance in any of his encounters. The aforementioned attacks include the following:
- a left jab (unused),
- a left hook (unused),
- a right uppercut (unused),
- a left uppercut (unused),
- a hopping left jab (unused), and
- a right cross (unused).
Although Han usually shows good sportsmanship in fights, such as making his goons back off before fighting Kiryu, he becomes increasingly desperate in his last boss fight. During his QTE sequence, his honorable facade slips away as he uses techniques that are illegal in boxing, including stomping on Kiryu's foot, and an attempt at both poking him in the eyes and a blow to the groin.
Han becomes far more aggressive upon entering Heat Mode. In his final fight, he instantly starts in Heat mode and remains in it for the rest of the battle. His aura is red, like all other bosses in Yakuza 6.
Han's moveset is used by Scar in the demo version of Yakuza 6.

Notes[]
- ↑ In-game, Han is stated to be in his 20s.[1]
- ↑ The given height of 180 cm (5′ 11″) is based on the character model's scaling factor within Yakuza 6's data.[3] For Dragon Engine games, this method is believed to be very accurate (±2 cm). However, this is intended as an estimate, not a substitute for an official statistic.
