Masaharu Kaito (海藤 正治, Kaitō Masaharu) is a major supporting character featured in Judgment and Lost Judgment, the protagonist of The Kaito Files, and a minor character in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. He is a former lieutenant of the Matsugane Family, as well as the former manager of Charles. He is a private investigator at Yagami Detective Agency.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Kaito has a tall and muscular build, cropped black hair, and a chinstrap beard. A small scar cuts through his left eyebrow. Around 2006-2007, he sports longer, spiked hair and a clean-shaven face.

Attire[]

Kaito wears an orange, yellow and black floral silk button down shirt, a pair of light grey dress pants, a brown leather belt, and a pair of black slip-on leather loafers. This outfit is called "Trendy Shirt Style".

When he was in the Matsugane Family, he wore an untucked blue patterned silk dress shirt with orange buttons, a small silver chain necklace with a square pendant, white pinstripe slacks, and brown leather smooth toe oxfords. This outfit is called "Retro Style". Wearing this outfit after unlocking the "Master of Disguise" ability also causes Kaito's hair to become spiked and his facial hair to become clean shaven as it was when he was younger.

During a flashback with Mikiko, Kaito wears a heather gray sweater and matching sweatpants. His hair and facial hair is also the same as when he was younger. This outfit is called "Casual Clothes".

While boxing, Kaito wears an orange tank top, orange boxing gloves, gray branded athletic shorts, and orange high top boxing shoes. His shoes and shorts are the same as Higashi's, though they are different colors.

His suit of choice for special occasions is a charcoal grey pinstriped suit, a white dress shirt, a maroon necktie, and brown leather smooth toe oxfords. This outfit is called "Sleek Suit".

For stakeouts, he wears a gray flat cap, square glasses with gray metal frames, a brown sweater, faded blue jeans, and his usual black loafers. This outfit is called "Rugged Stakeout Style".

Personality[]

Once you step into the shadows, you're chained to 'em for life. Don't bullshit me like I'm one of your fuckin' brats.

— Kaito to Akutsu, Lost Judgment

Kaito has the resolve of a lion and is willing to rush in and protect the people closest to him even if it may cost him his life, like his partners Yagami and Higashi, his former patriarch Matsugane, his surrogate son Jun or his girlfriend Mikiko, and is an upbeat, easygoing, and energetic person, while also being quite insightful and thoughtful, much like a gorilla, as he can spot easy to miss details and connect the dots in mysteries quite well, and he enjoys helping people on his own and with his friends, although especially if money is involved, but in spite of his positives, he's also quite blunt, brash and honest, for better or worse, and at times he lets his temper get the best of him.

Kaito acts like an older brother to Yagami and Higashi, the latter of whom he was willing to lose a finger to protect. He is similarly brotherly to the children who frequent the game center Charles, though he states that Higashi is better with kids than he is. He is shown to care deeply for those he considers part of his family, and does not hesitate to jump into harm's way if it means protecting them.

Background[]

SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for The Kaito Files follow. (Skip)

During his childhood, Kaito suffered physical abuse from his alcoholic father. He was expelled from high school, and ran away from home, continuing on a path of delinquency until he eventually ended up in juvenile detention. He initially blamed his father for the way his life turned out, but came to realize that he was at fault.

Kaito joined the Matsugane Family after finishing middle school. Kaito at around age 18, met Yagami at Bar Tender, who he initially despised but eventually came to be close friends and partners.

Sometime between 2006 and 2007, Kaito was summoned to the Matsugane office to deal with a client who was unable to pay her host club tab, a young woman named Maho Natsume. When he arrived, he and was introduced to Maho and her sister, Mikiko Natsume, who had intended to work off the tab in Maho's place, but resorted to physical violence when Joji Hotta tore Maho's shirt. The arrangement was finalized, and Mikiko began working for a hostess club run by Kaito, who served as the bodyguard for the club, and Mikiko personally, as she would often get into physical fights with customers who groped the other girls there. She and Kaito eventually began dating.

In 2007, a rival family member shot and wounded his patriarch, Mitsugu Matsugane, prompting Kaito and several other members to seek revenge. This created a rift between him and Mikiko, who presented Kaito with an ultimatum; their future together, or Kaito's suicide mission. This was part of a calculated move by Kyoya Sadamoto, as he predicted that Kaito wouldn't sever his ties to Matsugane, and later married Mikiko after she and Kaito broke up, in order to seize the fortune she inherited from her family.

Kaito remained a part of Matsugane family for over twenty years, managing Charles on their behalf, and was one of the only forces capable of keeping Kyohei Hamura's influence in check. He was left in charge of the Matsugane Family Office the day an armed robber broke in and stole one hundred million yen from the safe Kaito was guarding. To avoid any casualties, he cooperated without putting up a fight, as Toru Higashi was also present at the time, unbeknownst to the robber. Kaito hid this fact, and later claimed sole responsibility for the incident.

He was nearly forced to perform yubitsumeWP for his failure to stop the robbery, but with Matsugane and Yagami's intervention, he was expelled from the family instead, with his finger intact. Following his expulsion, he joined the Yagami Detective Agency as a private detective.

Judgment: 2018-2019[]

MAJIMA CONSTRUCTION IS AT WORK! This section is under construction.

Kaito helps Yagami with his line of work, providing extra muscle as a bodyguard or piloting a drone for surveillance. When extra information is needed on the murders in Kamurocho, he helps Yagami seek out Kazuya Ayabe.

Yagami becomes a target for the Matsugane Family after he refuses to back down from investigating the mole, which leads to Kaito reuniting with Toru Higashi when he and his men attack Kaito at the detective agency's office. He asks Yagami to tail him and see if he has changed since Kaito's expulsion from the family a year prior.

When he and Yagami head over to survey KJ Art a second time, they are confronted and held at gunpoint by Satoshi Shioya, but Fumiya Sugiura saves them, and they meet up with Higashi at Charles afterward to discuss the situation.

Kaito encounters his old classmate Hayato Adachi, and the two form a business partnership, with Kaito serving as hired muscle for Adachi's company, though Kaito secretly intends to confirm the disturbing rumors about Adachi's business practices. He neglects to inform Yagami of his plan, which leads to a confrontation between the two. Afterward, Kaito reveals he knew about the rumors and reconciles with Yagami, and the two officially become partners.

Kaito assists with the raid on Honmaruen after the Kyorei Clan try to kidnap Mafuyu Fujii, and he, Yagami and Sugiura meet with Shigeru Kajihira, who asks them to investigate the death of Toru Hashiki and the ADDC. In the process, they decide to bug the Matsugane Family office, and Kaito leads Yagami to Tashiro — who they strip and take clothes from — to serve as a disguise. Through this, they are eventually lead to Ryusuke Kido for answers. Kaito interrogates him with Higashi, but they are beaten badly by The Mole who comes to Kido's rescue.

Next month, during Ayabe's trial, Kaito prevents Ishimatsu from escaping, and learns that he has ordered the death of Kuroiwa to cover up the ADDC's involvement in the murders. Kaito, Yagami, Sugiura, and Higashi make their way to the ADDC, rushing to get to Yoji Shono before Kuroiwa can. Kaito stays near the entrance with Higashi in order to fight off the security officers, while Yagami and Sugiura make their way through the building toward Kuroiwa. The two form a truce with the officers, and head to where the others are. Kaito stops Kuroiwa from killing Shono, and they witness the failure of AD-9 once Shono injects it into himself.

A week after the trial, Kaito resumes regular life with Yagami, who has chosen to continue his work with Kaito rather than returning to being a lawyer.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name: 2019[]

MAJIMA CONSTRUCTION IS AT WORK! This section is under construction.

The Yagami Detective Agency receives a client from Sotenbori asking for help tracking down a "gorilla-built" man attacking homeless people. Kaito heads out to Sotenbori alongside Higashi to help out the client, and also to scope out the land for a potential Sotenbori expansion.

Lost Judgment: 2021-2022[]

SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for Lost Judgment follow. (Skip)

Following Keiko Hamada's case, Yokohama 99 calls Yagami and Kaito to Isezaki Ijincho to tackle bullying cases. They go to Seiryo High School to plant hidden surveillance devices, with Kaito using his knowledge as a former delinquent to find ideal positions. They plant a camera in Class 2-2 after recognizing some delinquent students, whose homeroom teacher Yoko Sawa Kaito is smitten by. After planting hidden speakers, Kaito is one of the voices to encourage students to stand up for the bullied Mami Koda. When Yagami later intends to meet with the delinquents, Kaito leads him to them by drone.

Kaito is informed by Yagami that he will meet Sawa at Plage for his investigation of Hiro Mikoshiba, evoking jealousy. He later interrupts Yagami's fight against Jin Kuwana outside Plage, and, together with Sugiura and Tsukumo, the trio goes to town for leisure. Following Mikoshiba's death being made public, the Yokohama 99 room is attacked as they are discussing the details around Mikoshiba. They chase the assailants - the Yokohama Liumang's White Mask faction. Kaito and Kuwana help Yagami escape after he defeats Tesso, but they return to see other assailants had attacked Tsukumo and Sugiura, causing Kuwana to leave after assessing the threat.

Yagami and Kaito return to Kamurocho for the former to meet Akihiro Ehara, who may be connected to the second set of assailants. They see that RK is roaming the streets to look for a missing man. That night, Tsukumo emails Kaito with newly-released footage of Mikoshiba's murder with Ehara as the killer. As Ehara had an alibi for not being the murderer, Yagami doubts its authenticity, but Kaito believes it is real. After discussing the new development and its impact on the Court with Genda Law Office, the detective duo see they are tailed by a group of RK members, and decide to visit their superior Daimu Akutsu to make him call them off.

Akutsu tries to have Kaito join RK, but he declines the offer. Akutsu tries to forcefully make Kaito join, but a fight and Kazuki Soma's order makes him stop for the time being. They head back to Ijincho later for further investigation and split up. During his investigation, Kaito receives a call from Saori, who is worried due to Yagami not answering her calls. Tsukumo is able to locate Yagami, and Kaito takes Sugiura with him to rescue Yagami from Akutsu. They go to Sawa's apartment to see if she is okay after being held hostage by Soma, only to see she was murdered. Kaito tells Yagami to focus and look for any clues to help.

Kaito is told that Kuwana was formerly known as Kitakata and was a teacher at Kurokawa Academy, Sawa's high school. To ask him questions of his link to Ehara's conspiracy, the detectives search for his whereabouts. Kaito gets a lead by asking around bars, and he brings Yagami to Kuwana's residence only to find it already searched by RK. They are directed to Siren by some neighbors to seek Kuwana's relative, where Kaito is stabbed by Soma, having his life flash before his eyes as he passes out. An ambulance is called for Kaito by Kuwana's relative after Soma escapes, and Kaito is taken to a hospital, where Yagami and then Tsukumo would visit him.

A few days later, Kaito recovers and joins Yagami and Higashi in Kamurocho as muscle for Saori, who worked as a hostess to get close to Akutsu. After Akutsu and his goons are defeated, they are unable to get Soma's location from him, but Soma's impressive foresight and him rounding up yakuza after the Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance dissolution leads Kaito to realize Soma himself works for Public Security before Akutsu is killed. Yagami and Kaito meet Irie for more background information on Soma, and seeing the former Nikkyo Consortium President in his current state dismays Kaito, and offers to visit him in the future.

Kaito and Yagami, with Higashi joining shortly after, enter a building being raided by RK. When Yagami needs a distraction, Kaito and Higashi pretend to be two cats fighting. They do not find Soma, but learn he is in Ijincho, and the detective duo heads there the next day. After Kuwana disappears following a meeting with Yagami, Kaito joins Sugiura in finding him, but comes up short. The gang convenes at Qing Jin with Tesso to discuss what they have learned.

Tsukumo calls Kaito and others to the site of Mikoshiba's murder, where Koda and Akane are being held hostage by RK. When they enter the building, Tsukumo created an opening and Kaito secures the girls while Yagami, Higashi, and Sugiura subdue the RK thugs. One month later, Kuwana has revealed himself and Tsukumo has pinpointed his location. Kaito, Sugiura, and Higashi pick up Yagami in a van and head to the location with help from Seiryo students and the Yokohama Liumang to keep the police away from them.

They arrive at the warehouse where Kuwana situated himself, and fight their way through, eventually reaching the lowermost floor, where RK and Soma are also hunting for Kuwana. Kaito, Sugiura, Higashi, and Kuwana deal with RK while Yagami defeats Soma. Kuwana is still bent on sticking to his bully hunting crusade, but Yagami still opposes him. As the other gives the two space, Kaito throws into question if there is truly a right answer between the two of them. Kuwana is eventually convinced to give up, and after the case is closed, the Yagami Detective Agency hosts a celebration with the Yokohama 99 detectives and Higashi.

The Kaito Files: 2022[]

SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for The Kaito Files follow. (Skip)

While Yagami is away on a job, Kaito contacts Saori and Hoshino to help him with a job from a client who wants her extorted money back from the Bato Detective Agency. After completing that job, he visits Bar Tender and is informed of a job offering ¥20 million. The client, Kyoya Sadamoto, wants Kaito to find his supposedly-deceased wife Mikiko Sadamoto, Kaito's ex-girlfriend. Due to old wounds, Kaito initially declines the case.

After getting a call from Higashi saying a kid is causing a commotion at Charles, Kaito heads there and meets Jun Sadamoto, who also wants Kaito to find Mikiko. He also states that he may be Kaito's biological son based on what Mikiko wrote in her diary. Though hesitant, Kaito decides to look for Mikiko after all.

During the search, Jun is kidnapped by the Bato, who want him for ransom. Kaito is able to track down Jun, but the two of them are held at gunpoint. Jun decides to jump out the window and reconvene at the batting center, where Kaito reprimands him for acting so recklessly. Jun wants to be yakuza because of how highly Mikiko wrote of Kaito, but Kaito dissuades him, saying there are other ways to become stronger. Eventually, they find a lead that takes them to the Shirakaba Clinic.

Kaito and Jun meet with Yasutaka Shirakaba, who conducted the DNA test on the body that fell from the waterfall and says Mikiko is indeed dead, but holes in his story make Kaito realize he is lying. Shirakaba admits he helped Mikiko fake her death after Crimson Lotus tried to murder her. She developed amnesia and Shirakaba kept what he knew from her due to being smitten by her. With Crimson Lotus having followed them, Kaito fights them off and they return to Kamurocho.

Following reports of a building set ablaze, Kaito sees Mikiko on a rooftop pointing a gun at someone. When he catches up to her, she states Crimson Lotus was the real culprit behind her family's murder. Gangsters surround them, and Kaito takes Mikiko and jumps off to get her to safety. The fall hospitalizes Kaito, but after he recovers, he investigates the burnt building and finds a hard drive and Kenmochi's business card. He sends the hard drive to Tsukumo for analysis, then takes Jun with him to tail Kenmochi, suspecting Mikiko will target him.

Jun spots Mikiko tailing Kenmochi with another man, and Kaito realized she fell into a trap. He fights through Red Brick Hotel to reach her, and defeats Kenmochi before taking Mikiko to safety. Mikiko clears up Kaito's confusion and tells him what she has been up to. She is taken to another room to rests, but escapes when no one is looking. Kaito demands information from Senda and Igarashi, who, after a fight, tell him to join them in a drive to Yokohama, where Mikiko will be.

On the way, Kaito is told by Igarashi that Sadamoto had orchestrated Mikiko's tragedy to inherit her parents' fortune, and Kaito's breakup with her was part of the plan. He reaches Mikiko, who intends to kill Sadamoto, but Sadamoto holds Jun hostage and reveals that Mikiko will be incarcerated due to evidence he planted. Kaito offers to take her place, but Jun is able to break free of Sadamoto, allowing Kaito to defeat him, however, Sadamoto was able to poison Kaito. Kaito and Jun convince Mikiko to not kill Sadamoto and become a criminal, and before he passes out, witnesses Kenmochi strangle Sadamoto to death.

Kaito remains unconscious for three days, and sees Yagami has returned and left a fruit basket for him. He then comforts Jun over the hardship he has faced, then reads a letter of challenge from Shirakaba. He and Jun go to Shirakaba's clinic, and Kaito affirms he wants to take Mikiko with him. Kaito and Shirakaba duel, with Kaito winning. Kaito asks if Mikiko still wants to join him in spite of his subpar living conditions, which she gladly accepts.

Fighting Style[]

Masaharu Kaito is a fearsome street fighter, relying on his brute strength, extremely heightened natural senses and pragmatism as means of combat rather than actual technique. He is not a man to be taken lightly despite his lack of formal training.

Judgment and Lost Judgment[]

Kaito's moveset is Kazuma Kiryu's Brawler style. He has a unique finisher (a right low kick) and basic attack (a right push kick), as well as Kiryu's Brawler Kick Combo. Unlike most bosses in Judgment, Kaito does not have a Deadly Attack. His aura is light orange.

Lost Judgment: The Kaito Files[]

Kaito has two fighting styles in The Kaito Files, those being his Bruiser style and his Tank style. He starts the game with his Bruiser style, and re-acquires Tank style during his encounter with Jun at Charles. His combos in both styles have the ability to hit foes while they are down, and like Yagami, he can quickstep and/or switch between styles during Finishing Blows (or during any animation while in EX Boost).

Bruiser[]

Bruiser (カチコミ, Kachikomi, lit. "Raid") style is based on Kiryu's Brawler style, but with some differences. It emits an orange aura. Once EX Breaking Point: Lone Wolf is unlocked, if EX Boost is triggered while in critical health in Bruiser, Kaito's attack strength is increased until his health is recovered, EX Gauge is depleted, or EX Boost is no longer active.

Combos[]

Exactly the same as Kiryu's Brawler style, with the new Gorigori Finisher: after the 3rd finisher, Kaito can do a slow flying knee (which can juggle), and after the 4th finisher, he does a full-body jumping slam. He can also do Gripping Piledriver (Kiryu's Snatching Strike) after the 3rd finisher by pressing grab instead of heavy attack, and unlike Snatching Strike, Gripping Piledriver does not require any heat, meaning it can be used nearly indefinitely on most enemies. In EX Boost, his heavy attack Rush Combo is Kiryu's Brawler Kick Combo, followed by a sliding kick and a double arm raise which can start juggles.

Basic attacks[]

Bruiser style's heavy attack is Ichiban Kasuga's Ruffian's Kick, a forceful right push kick that sends enemies stumbling, and holding the heavy attack button has Kaito perform Kaito Rocket 2.0, Kiryu's Yakuza 6 dropkick. While running, pressing light attack has Kaito do a right haymaker, pressing heavy attack has him do Kiryu's Brawler style dropkick and pressing evade has him do an arms-first sliding attack. With the ability Shape Up, he can use Kiryu's Brawler style quickstep attacks. Unlike Kiryu, Kaito cannot transition to his Rush Combo with the running light attack.

Grab attacks[]

Kaito does not have any follow-ups after a grab; after grabbing an opponent, he will immediately follow up with Keiji Shibusawa's unused Beast style reverse piledriver.

Blocking, dodging and reversals[]

Kaito can quickstep twice, and use Dodge Roll after the second quickstep. Like Kiryu, he can also retaliate immediately after being hit, although his retaliatory attack, Hammer of Will, is a left haymaker/left uppercut instead of Kiryu's Resolute Counter left haymaker/headbutt.

His Mortal Reversal is a rough rugby tackle.

Counterattacks[]

Kaito can unleash a Bomb Punch (Kiryu's Counter Hook) from his fighting stance, although it does not grant him any invulnerability frames. Unique to him is the Repel skill, where Kaito stops most attacks aimed at him in its tracks by hitting the opponent right before their attack connects, sending them stumbling back and blocking any incoming damage. When upgraded with Knife Counter, Repel also works on enemies with one-handed weapons (and disarms them if they are not bosses), and with Bruiser's Hidden Arts, his attack speed is significantly sped up for 9 seconds on a successful Repel.

EX Actions[]

These are mostly Kiryu's Heat Actions, such as EX Headstrong, EX Pulverize and EX Full Swing (which can also be done in Tank style). Kaito does, however, have some unique EX Actions: EX Farewell to Arms, where he approaches and narrowly avoids a gunshot before brutally punching a gun-wielding enemy's face, EX Desperate Throw: Do or Die (which can also be done in Tank style), where he picks up a downed enemy, repeatedly wrenches their back over his shoulders and finally throws them backwards, and an EX Action extremely similar to the original Ultimate Essence where Kaito slaps an enemy's cheek so hard they rebound, and follows up by kicking them away.

Tank[]

Tank (テッパン, Teppan, lit. "Iron Plate") style is based on Kiryu's Beast style, but with some differences. It emits a bluish-purple aura. Once EX Breaking Point: Unstoppable is unlocked, if EX Boost is triggered while in critical health in Tank, Kaito's knockback resistance is increased and he cannot die until his health is recovered, EX Gauge is depleted, or EX Boost is no longer active.

Combos[]

Exactly the same as Kiryu's Beast style. With Cross Strike, by doing the first light attack and holding the light attack button, he can perform Kiryu's 3rd charged light attack, which can start juggles, though he cannot follow up with the 3rd Finishing Blow like Kiryu can.

Basic attacks[]

Exactly the same as Kiryu's Beast style, with the addition of running attacks: pressing light attack while running has Kaito do a slow right palm strike, pressing heavy attack has him do a rolling slam which inflicts the agony status, and pressing evade has him to a right-leg sliding kick.

Grab attacks[]

Unlike with Kiryu's styles, Kaito's Tank style is his only style which allows him to hold opponents in a proper grab state, resulting in any wall EX Actions being exclusive to Tank. From a grab, Kaito has 3 follow-ups: light attack has him violently headbutt the enemy, heavy attack has him slam them to the ground, and grab has him take the opponent by the head and shove them forward, sending them stumbling and allowing them to hit other enemies on their way.

Using Human Helicopter, Kaito can quickstep and grab the enemy, and then throw them away in a particular direction. As Kiryu can, Kaito can pick up ambient weapons in the middle of a combo or simply by pressing light attack near a weapon. Unlike Kiryu, Kaito will not throw light weapons away with the final hit of the string unless he ends it with a heavy attack. The way he swings large motorbikes around is also different from Kiryu, being the same as other two-handed weapons.

When in EX Boost, he also gains the ability to tackle opponents in a similar manner to Shinada's Meteor Tackle, and end the grab with a fisherman suplex. His heavy attack also turns into a grab, where he grabs the opponent leg first, hoists them over his shoulder and throws them to the ground.

Blocking, dodging and reversals[]

Like with Kiryu's Beast style's Resist Guard, Kaito's Tank style has Iron Guard, which has him sponge damage from all sides instead of blocking it. He can use Perfect Iron Guard to knock away enemies, and Iron Break to Iron Guard in the middle of a combo. If grabbed, he can use Wrestler's Throw (Kiryu's Brawler style grab reversal) to throw off the enemy. While guarding, pressing light attack has him use Matsugane Mixer (Kiryu's Beast style Clothesline Bash). If hit, he can use Gutsy Grab to immediately grab the enemy.

He also has 2 special abilities associated with blocking:

  • Guard Rush, done by running while having Iron Guard active, where Kaito will cross his arms in front of his head and run into enemies, and
  • Matsugane Bulldozer, done by holding the guard button and running while Kaito is holding a large weapon, where Kaito will use said large weapon as a shield to barge into enemies with. Both are Kiryu's Beast style guarded charges.

His Mortal Reversal involves him jumping up and delivering a powerful elbow drop to the enemy's midsection.

Counterattacks[]

By pressing grab as an enemy approaches while Kaito is using Iron Guard, he can do Steely Embrace (Kiryu's Death Hug).

EX Actions[]

As with Bruiser style, most EX Actions are Kiryu's Heat Actions, such as EX Stand Crush, EX Tackle Crush and EX Full Swing, and one EX Action is even a Shinada Heat Action (EX Savage Grab). Tank style also has unique EX Actions, however: EX Wall Pin, where he slams an opponent against a wall before delivering two headbutts, causing the opponent to drop to their knees, after which Kaito delivers an uppercut to their face; a variant of Wall Pin where he slams an opponent grabbed by the back into the wall face-first before scraping their face down against it; and EX Unyielding Counter, a right shovel hook followed by a Kinniku Buster after being attacked in Iron Guard.
