Morning Glory Orphanage (あさがお/アサガオAsagao), also known as Sunshine Orphanage in the English PlayStation 3 versions of Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5 is located opposite a beach in Okinawa. The institution hosts eight local children plus Haruka Sawamura and is managed by Kazuma Kiryu, though the land belongs to Shigeru Nakahara.

History[]

Morning Glory Orphanage opened between 2005 and 2007.[1] It has ties to a similar institution called Sunflower Orphanage, where Kiryu was raised during the 1970s and 1980s. When the former manager passed away and he was asked if he knew anyone to take on the job, Kiryu volunteered himself, as looking after kids was something he wanted to do after his father figure and Sunflower proprietor Shintaro Kazama did the same.

Yakuza 3[]

The orphanage made its first appearance in Yakuza 3. During the course of the game, the orphanage became a contested place due to its location, which happened to be adjacent to a proposed resort and military base. Yoshitaka Mine destroyed the orphanage by ramming it with bulldozers, but it was soon rebuilt at the end of the game.

Yakuza 4[]

Kiryu still runs the orphanage as of 2010. Two escaped convicts, Taiga Saejima and Goh Hamazaki, washed up near the orphanage. Both men received a first-aid care at the orphanage before going their separate ways; Saejima heads for Tokyo while Hamazaki remained in Okinawa until his death.

Yakuza 5[]

The orphanage does not appear, but it is first mentioned through a substory, where Kiryu, now going incognito in Fukuoka, decided to transfer some money to the kids over at the orphanage for Christmas. The orphanage is featured in two flashback scenes where Mirei Park, a talent agency president who was on a trip to scout for talent, paid a visit to the orphanage and had a talk with Kiryu about Haruka, whom she considered a potential talent for the idol business. She convinces Kiryu to leave and provides support for the orphanage after his departure while Haruka leaves for Sotenbori to become an idol and also supports the orphanage.

Though Kiryu was offered to choose his successor, it is unknown who became the manager after Kiryu's departure, or if there was any manager at all.

Yakuza 6[]

The orphanage made another appearance in the sixth game. After passing out from the wounds he sustained during the ending of Yakuza 5, Kiryu visualizes Morning Glory's beachside, and he walks towards the orphanage, where a bright light emanates. It later appears while the kids and Haruka discuss their daily lives and, later that night, when Haruka departs the orphanage after saying a brief goodbye to Ayako. Kiryu returns to the orphanage about three years later, and after a brief stay, he leaves for Kamurocho. The orphanage makes its final appearance during the epilogue when Haruka returns to the orphanage, now with Yuta Usami and their son, Haruto.

The Daidoji Faction now funds Morning Glory in secret, transferring money through multiple dummy accounts to avoid the funding being traced back to them. On the anniversary of Kiryu's death, the residents of the orphanage visit Kiryu's grave when Ayako and Taichi discover a hidden camera set up by the Daidoji. They already believe their father is likely alive, so they decide to speak to the camera and deliver a message to Kiryu, just incase. They tell the camera that everyone is doing fine at the orphanage and discuss recent events at Morning Glory. They return the next day and leave a picture drawn by Haruto. A Daidoji agent takes a photo of the drawing which is later shown to Kiryu along with the hidden camera footage.

Trivia[]

  • Morning Glory's history is inconsistent between games. Yakuza 3 states that Kiryu took over after the previous manager passed away, however, later games state that he started the orphanage.
  • The change from "Sunshine Orphanage" to "Morning Glory Orphanage" was due to a previous mistranslation by the Yakuza 3 localization team, and was corrected in Yakuza 6 onwards so as not to confuse the players about the connection between Club Sunshine and the orphanage.[2] It appears that the Yakuza 3 team had originally been concerned about the double entendre regarding the English usage of "morning glory".[3]
