Nankobo Tenkai (南光坊 天海, Nankōbō Tenkai) is the overarching antagonist of Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!. He is an emissary for the Shogunate Administration who wants to take control of Japan through political manipulation and is loosely based on the real-life historical figure TenkaiWP.

Tenkai is stout and bald, and his eyes are gray.
Attire[]
Tenkai wears a regular Buddhist monk outfit, with a head dress and robes.
Personality[]
He is a cowardly man, as seen when he is first confronted by Miyamoto. At first, he offers a vengeful Miyamoto a helping hand in repelling the rival forces, but Miyamoto sees through his manipulation.
He is also seen as an impressive motivator. He had a lot of respect from the Tokugawa shogunate.
He is manipulative, and as a politician, can easily turn someone over to his side, much like Kojiro and Marume. However much later, that persuasion would wear off as they started to learn their roles in Tenkai's plan.
Background[]
Around five years before the events of Kenzan!, he and Yagyu Sekishusai have a talk about going against the Tokugawa Clan in order to boost the Yagyu Clan's power. However, this led to Tenkai blackmailing Sekishusai into becoming his unwilling ally, along with his son, Yagyu Munenori, and Tokugawa general, Marume Nagayoshi.
Involvement[]
Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!: 1600-1605[]
Tenkai is first seen in the game checking in on the soldiers Marume is currently training. Tenkai tells him privately about his plan, and wanted him to make sure that the job was done properly. After this, he had sent out orders for Marume to send the newly recruited Kiryu Kazumanosuke to assassinate Yuki Hideyasu, who was the son of the shogun of the Tokugawa clan, Tokugawa Ieyasu. This was to make sure Yuki's brother, Tokugawa Hidetada, who was easily manipulated, would become the next shogun, and therefore become Tenkai's next ally. Later, he found out that Haruka is Yuki's daughter, and proceeds to track her down. Once he knew her location, he sent Marume to kill her. However, Marume instead killed her family and left her alive.
Some time later, he realises Haruka is alive and well, being taken in by Miyamoto. Once Miyamoto is away, he kidnaps Haruka, taking her hostage. After Miyamoto defeats Kojiro, he shoots Kojiro, injuring him. Miyamoto gives chase to the fleeing Tenkai. Once he takes down five of his ninjas, Miyamoto finds Tenkai at the edge of a cliff with Haruka. He tries to persuade Miyamoto into letting him go, but he sees through his corruption and charges at him. Tenkai draws a pistol and begins the final battle.
After being beaten, he is thrown down the cliff. Hidetada arrives, after hearing that his daughter was kidnapped, and goes to execute the cowering monk, but Miyamoto stops him, stating that there should be a public hearing before his execution. However, Tenkai's army arrives near the shore as Tenkai himself proclaims his victory over Miyamoto and the rest of Japan, hoping to bring his own shogunate and make him the "God Lord Tenkai". Ultimately, he is killed by a vengeful Kojiro, ending his life and influence on the country.
Fighting Style[]
Tenkai has no skill with a blade or in hand-to-hand combat, resorting to using a flintlockWP pistol in combat. His main strategy is to take potshots at Kiryu while running away and hiding from him, and sometimes unloading barrages of bullets at him; however, he cannot be knocked down with normal attacks due to having super armor. His attacks consist of:
- firing his pistol,
- holding his pistol two-handed and rapidly firing his pistol nine times,
- throwing a cloud of poison as a guard reversal, which can stun Kiryu; and
- firing his pistol as a damage reversal, followed by another pistol-shot.
He will stop to reload his gun after firing it too many times.
When he gets far enough away from Kiryu, Tenkai will lean back with his arms wide open and begin to regenerate his health. This ability cannot be interrupted by any of the former's basic attacks.
Trivia[]
- He is the only final boss who battles the protagonist during the day, not at night.
