Serena (セレナ), later known as New Serena (ニューセレナ Nyū Serena) is a bar located on Tenkaichi Street in Kamurocho. It commonly serves as a safe haven for Kazuma Kiryu and his friends, with its back room acting as a hideout.
History[]
Serena was established at an unknown point. By 1988, Reina became the proprietor of Serena.[a]
Yakuza 0[]
Akira Nishikiyama is a regular at Serena, with the "family higher-ups" not having found the place yet. With an appointment set up with Jun Oda at Serena, Kazuma Kiryu enters the bar for the first time, encountering Nishikiyama there on accident. Soon after, Oda enters the bar, severely bruised, followed by the Taihei Association and Hiroki Awano entering the bar. After the Taihei Association leaves, Reina tends to Oda's wounds.
Days later, Reina finds Kiryu bleeding at Public Park 3, and allows him to hide in Serena to recover. Once in Serena, Dojima Family members enter the bar looking for Kiryu, leading to Kiryu being lured out to the rest of the family on Tenkaichi Street.
As Nishikiyama leaves the bar, Goro Majima calls out to Reina, asking her if Nishikiyama comes by often. Nishikiyama stops, and reveals his identity to Majima. Suspecting Majima is a threat to Makoto Makimura, Nishikiyama pulls out his gun, however it is deflected by Majima. After the two fight, Reina informs Majima that Makoto has gone missing.
Like a Dragon: Prologue[]
In Like a Dragon: Prologue in 1990, Kiryu's and Nishikiyama's childhood friend Yumi Sawamura becomes a hostess at Serena.
Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami[]
Kiryu, Nishikiyama and Yumi continue to patronize Serena regularly. This all changes on the night of October 1, 1995, when Sohei Dojima is killed by Nishikiyama. This causes Yumi to lose her memory and Kiryu to take the fall and go to prison. While Kiryu was behind bars, Yumi returned to Serena and worked there under the identity of "Mizuki", until opening her own bar, Ares. After Kiryu's release in 2005, he comes back to Serena to look for Yumi, not knowing that Reina is secretly working with Nishiki to find and track Kiryu.
Yakuza 2/Yakuza Kiwami 2[]
Serena is shown to be abandoned. Kiryu uses it as a hideout, where he cares for an injured Kaoru Sayama.
Yakuza 3[]
The bar is bought and reopened under the name New Serena by an unnamed woman.
Yakuza 4[]
Makoto Date lends a helping hand, as the owner was absent to attend to her family. A space two floors above in the same building serves as the office of Sky Finance, a credit company owned by Shun Akiyama.
Yakuza 5[]
New Serena briefly serves as the main protagonists' base of operations, similar to Yakuza 4. Just prior to the finale, as well as in Premium Adventure, the four inactive protagonists will be in the bar. Each one can be switched to by interacting with them.
Yakuza 6[]
New Serena is still under the mama's ownership.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon[]
New Serena is still in operation during the events of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and is still attended by Makoto Date. He allows Ichiban's party to use it as home base while they are in Kamurocho.
Spin-offs[]
Yakuza: Dead Souls[]
During the zombie outbreak, Akiyama brings a feverish Hana here to rest. When he returns, the bar has been ransacked and Hana kidnapped.
Trivia[]
- From Yakuza 3 onwards, the staircase at the back of the building is flipped, causing a misalignment with the location of the back door on the interior compared to the exterior. The staircase is flipped back starting in Yakuza 6, as the Dragon Engine's transitions between exterior and interior made the misalignment obvious.
- In Yakuza 0, Serena is located on the third floor despite being located on the second floor in every other game, correcting the misalignment but causing another consistency issue.
- In the PlayStation 2 games, the elevator to the bar is located some distance into the building and is located on the left from the street entrance. In the Dragon Engine games, the elevator is closer to the street but is located on the right from the entrance. In every other game, it is facing the street and is almost at the front of the building.
- When photos are taken from within Serena in Yakuza 6, there is a chance that an image of Nishikiyama as a ghost will appear in them.
