The Old Fox's Task (狸爺の依頼, Tanukioyaji no Irai) is the tenth chapter of Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!.

Plot[]

The following day, Kiryu meets with Ito and Koetsu to discuss how to proceed, given that their only lead turned out to be false. During the talk, Koetsu mentions that some of his men looked into the fire in Tsuruya and they found that the fire was lit in the oiran quarters, so one of the brothel's women must have been the one who started it. Afterwards, a strange old man arrives, saying he's come to Koetsu for information. As it turns out, the old man is looking for Kiryu; having been sent here by Hozoin Inei. Kiryu realizes that this man is the "Old Fox", whom Inei had told him would soon come to him. The Old Fox asks Kiryu to take him to Tsuruya at night, so he can meet with a relative who works there.

At nightfall, Kiryu takes the old man to Gion. There, the pair run into Majima, who's come to town to hang out with Kiryu. The three go to Tsuruya and spend some time drinking and talking, during which the Old Fox reveals that his relative is Haruka and that he intends to buy her freedom from the brothel. When Yoshino comes to perform a dance for the three men, she recognizes Majima and immediately feels unwell, excusing herself. Upon seeing her, Majima also feels strange and leaves to clear his thoughts.

While getting some fresh air on Tsuruya's roof, Majima accidentally slips on a loose cobblestone and falls off, hitting his head upon landing. The impact jostles his memory and makes him remember everything. He runs into Haruka and; recognizing her as the girl whom Kiryu and the Old Fox had been talking about, he kidnaps her. Inside, Kiryu is informed by one of the brothel's guards about the kidnapping. Immediately, he hurries towards Kiyomizu Temple, where Majima told the guards he was going. Yoshino meets Kiryu as he's leaving Gion and insists on going with him, but Kiryu asks her not to, as she's not allowed to leave the pleasure district.

Kiryu travels to Kiyomizu Temple and confronts Majima in the temple sanctuary, where he's chained up Haruka. After regaining his memory, Majima mistook Yoshino for Ukiyo and believed that, instead of protecting his sister as he'd promised, Miyamoto had actually sold her to the brothel. Furious, Majima attacks his friend and the two battle, as Majima will not let Miyamoto explain. However, Yoshino arrives and puts a stop to the fight. She tells Majima that she's actually Ukiyo's older sister, Ageha, who'd sold herself to a brothel to give Ukiyo money. When Majima asks what became of Ukiyo, Kiryu remorsefully admits that she'd been killed by the bandits who were after him. Kiryu says that he'd suspected Yoshino was Ukiyo's sister since they first met, but had not told her the truth about her sister's death out of shame for his failure to protect her.

The group's conversation is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Sasaki Kojiro. The samurai assassin mocks the three for their personal drama and also reveals that Yoshino had been the one who set the fire in Tsuruya after Sasaki gave her the money to buy her own freedom from the brothel. Afterwards, Sasaki tries to kill Haruka. Majima stops him, but ends up getting wounded and falling off the cliff which the temple is built on. Kiryu and Sasaki prepare to fight, but they are stopped when the Old Fox shows up. Sasaki recognizes the old man and; when he insists that he stand down and leave, Sasaki complies. Before departing, Sasaki tells Kiryu that he was impressed by his fight against Majima and promises that they will have a rematch of their fight in Sekigahara five years prior. The Old Fox unchains Haruka and, at Kiryu's insistence, he promises to explain everything to both of them the following day.
