The Truth (真実, Shinjitsu) is the 11th chapter of Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!.
Plot[]
As he promised, the next day Kiryu and Haruka are taken to see the Old Fox by a large retinue of men. The Old Fox meets them dressed in daimyo regalia and reveals his identity: He is Tokugawa Ieyasu, the recently retired shogun of Japan, and also Haruka's grandfather. As it turns out, Haruka's father was Yuki Hideyasu, the man whom Kiryu killed five years prior on Marume's orders. Marume organized the assassination at the behest of Nankobo Tenkai, the imperial liaison, who wanted Yuki killed so that his more naïve, more easily manipulated younger brother Tokugawa Hidetada would be the next shogun instead. After her father's murder, Haruka was placed into the care of the people she believed were her family, out of fear that Tenkai would have her killed to eliminate Yuki's family line. Eventually, Tenkai tracked her down and sent Marume to kill her. Though Marume and his men did kill Haruka's foster family, the General could not bring himself to kill the girl and let her escape. Due to the sword that he was using at the time, Haruka ended up mistaking Marume for Miyamoto Musashi.
Tokugawa offers Haruka the possibility to come live with him in Edo Castle, but Haruka refuses, saying she wants to stay in Gion with Kiryu and Yoshino. Though hesitant, Tokugawa eventually agrees. Before the pair depart, Tokugawa tells Kiryu that if he wishes to know more about people who plotted against him and Haruka, he must travel to Yagyu village and meet with their local lord, the legendary swordsman Yagyu Sekishusai.
Upon returning to Gion, Kiryu tells his friends about what transpired and lets them know that he will be traveling to Yagyu village the following day. Afterwards, Yoshino meets with him alone and confesses that she has feelings for him, but she'd repressed them out of fear that he'd been the one who killed her sister. Kiryu admits he also loves her and the pair spend the night together before Kiryu leaves town the next morning.
At Yagyu village, Kiryu is taken to meet with the legendary swordsman, only to discover that Sekishusai was the Wandering Monk who saved him and took him to Gion four years prior. Sekishusai tells Kiryu that Sasaki Kojiro is actually his son, Yagyu Munenori, and he'd initially approached Tenkai to plot against the Tokugawa in order to increase the Yagyu Clan's power. However, Tenkai used the evidence of his proposed betrayal to blackmail him into becoming his puppet to advance his own political interests. Sekishusai requests that Miyamoto help put a stop to Tenkai in order to free his son from his control. The pair are then joined by Marume. The General explains that he turned against Tenkai after he ordered him to kill Haruka, and he's been helping Tokugawa and Sekishusai plot against him ever since. Marume begs for Miyamoto's forgiveness and offers to help him prepare for a fight with Sasaki by duelling him using the same sword-fighting style as him. Miyamoto forgives Marume and the two men have a rematch of their fight five years prior, which Miyamoto wins.
