The Promise (誓い, Chikai) is the third chapter of Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!.
Plot[]
A few days afterwards, Miyamoto Musashi and Majima Gorohachi have managed to travel to Omi Province, but Majima's injuries have gotten too severe and he can barely walk. Majima asks Miyamoto to deliver his sword to his sister, Ukiyo, in case he dies. Soon after, the pair are attacked by Tokugawa soldiers while crossing a bridge. Though Miyamoto manages to get across, Majima deliberately collapses the structure with him still on it to kill the soldiers, so that Miyamoto can get away.
Days later, a ragged Miyamoto makes it to Majima's village and meets Ukiyo, giving her Majima's sword and telling her of his death. Ukiyo initially rejects the sword, claiming that Majima was not her real brother. Nonetheless, she offers Miyamoto the chance to stay in her home for a bath and a meal before he moves on. That night, over dinner, Ukiyo explains that Majima was not her brother, but rather the man who killed her father in a duel. After her father's death, Ukiyo and her sister Ageha were left destitute and Ageha ended up selling herself to a brothel to giver her sister enough money to build a new life. Majima eventually met Ukiyo again and, feeling guilty for the pain he'd caused her, he offered to protect her village as penance. Moved by her story, Miyamoto decides to stay with her and give up his life as a swordsman.
A year passes and Miyamoto and Ukiyo have become lovers, living and working together in her farm. Ukiyo tries to convince Miyamoto to take up his sword again, since she realizes how proud he'd been to be a skilled swordsman, but Miyamoto refuses. Nonetheless, Ukiyo crafts decorations for her lover's swords, including tying two charms her mother had given her as a child to their hilts.
One day, bounty hunters come looking for Majima and end up recognizing Miyamoto. He fights against them to defend the farm and, despite beating them, he is unable to stop their leader from fatally wounding Ukiyo. With her dying breaths, Ukiyo thanks Miyamoto for giving her happiness once more and urges him to re-discover his pride as a swordsman. A distraught Miyamoto leaves one of his swords behind in tribute to Ukiyo before departing the village.
