A New Life (新たな人生, Arata na Jinsei) is the fourth chapter of Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!.

Plot[]

That night, Miyamoto Musashi is attacked by a new set of bounty hunters while traveling along a country road, but he is saved by a wandering warrior monk with a noticeable scar on his chest. The Monk takes Miyamoto to a nearby temple and tends to his wounds. Though the monk recognizes him as a wanted criminal, he does not let Miyamoto know. Once a few days have passed and Miyamoto has recovered, the Monk takes him to the red-light district of Gion, in nearby Kyoto. As the capital city is under imperial administration, the Shogunate's troops and bounty hunters have no direct authority there, giving Miyamoto a chance to start a new life.

While walking along the streets of Gion in search for a brothel to visit with the Monk, Miyamoto spots a courtesan who looks exactly like Ukiyo. The two men go to the brothel where she is employed and hire the courtesan, called Yoshino, to provide entertainment for them. Their dinner is interrupted when a rowdy samurai attacks another courtesan, but Miyamoto intervenes and saves the woman. During the scuffle, Yoshino recognizes the charm which Ukiyo had tied around Miyamoto's sword. As a reward for saving the girl, Miyamoto is paid several gold pieces by the brothel's manager.

A week later, Miyamoto has earned more gold by working as a bodyguard and by gambling; enough to buy himself a small house in Gion, where he can settle in to work as a mercenary. The Wandering Monk congratulates him on turning his life around and bids him goodbye, as he will leave Gion and continue his travels across the Japanese countryside. Before departing, he helps Miyamoto one last time by helping him choose an alias for himself: Kiryu Kazumanosuke.
