Hozoin (宝蔵院, Hōzōin) is the eighth chapter of Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!.

Plot[]

A few days after the fire, Tsuruya is in shambles, but the Landlady has quickly made a deal with the shogunate to have them rebuild it in exchange for her silence about the events leading to Itakura's murder. Ito was seriously wounded in his fight with Sasaki but is alive and being treated by a doctor. Kiryu goes to speak with Haruka, but she does not want to see him. The girl has realized that he is Miyamoto Musashi, since the man who killed her family had a charm around his sword hilt identical to the one Kiryu had. Kiryu swears he did not kill her family, but Haruka does not believe him.

Koetsu informs Kiryu that he has received new information on "Miyamoto Musashi"'s whereabouts: According to rumors, he will be attending this year's martial arts tournament at the famous Hozoin Temple. Kiryu decides to travel there and take part in the tournament in the hopes of confronting the imposter.

When he first arrives in Hozoin, Kiryu is denied entry because he does not have a recommendation letter from any dojos. However, he manages to procure a recommendation from Hozoin In'ei; the former master of the temple, after proving himself worthy by beating him in a fight. After getting him into the tournament, Master In'ei requests that Kiryu defeat the current temple master; his former pupil Hozoin Inshun, as he believes that Inshun's pride in his fighting prowess has diverted him from fulfilling his duties as master. Kiryu enters the tournament and easily makes it to the finals, where he is pitted against Inshun. The cocky monk initially refuses to fight Kiryu, as he believed that his rival would be "Miyamoto Musashi". However, Kiryu goads him into battling him and; despite Inshun's admirable fighting, he is ultimately defeated.

After the tournament is over, In'ei admits to Kiryu that he was the one who spread the rumors about "Miyamoto Musashi" entering the tournament. The old monk wanted to use "Miyamoto"'s infamy to attract skilled warriors to the competition so that one of them would defeat Inshun. However, he says that he did not spread the rumor alone. In'ei takes Kiryu to a small altar, where he comes face to face with Marume. The General admits that he helped his old friend In'ei spread the rumors because he hoped that Kiryu would be one of the warriors drawn to the tournament. Marume says he must pass on a message: Governor Itakura had been sent to Gion to find Haruka and take her to the Tokugawa Bakufu, who have been trying to find her. Marume's master wishes to prevent this from happening, so he sent him and Sasaki to kill both her and Itakura, but Marume couldn't bring himself to kill the girl. He warns Kiryu to protect Haruka, since she is of greater importance than she seems. When Kiryu tries to question him further, Marume refuses and departs.
