The Duel (果し合い, Hatashiai) is the ninth chapter of Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!.
Plot[]
Upon returning to Gion, Kiryu meets once again with Haruka at Tsuruya, where the girl demands explanations from him. While Kiryu does tacitly admit to being Miyamoto Musashi, he insists that he is not the "Miyamoto Musashi" who killed her family. He tells the girl that he'll continue his mission to find her family's killer and bring him to justice.
The date of the duel between Yoshioka Dojo and "Miyamoto Musashi" finally arrives, so Toji instructs Kiryu to go to Rendai Field at sundown to face off against the challenger. However, when Kiryu arrives there, he is instead faced with Seijuro, who has come so that his brother wouldn't have to fight. The elder Yoshioka attacks Kiryu, believing that he'd joined their Dojo to spy on them before the battle. Though Kiryu tries to dissuade Seijuro, the fight is inevitable and Kiryu ends up killing the elder Yoshioka. With his dying words, Seijuro asks Kiryu to look after his brother.
As Seijuro dies, Ueda Ryohei and several other members of the Dojo make their presence known. As it turns out, the challenge from "Miyamoto Musashi" had been sent by him and Toji, who were looking to set up a fake duel in which they could kill the Yoshioka brothers to usurp control of the dojo and then blame "Miyamoto". When Kiryu showed up at the dojo looking to join, this simply made their plans easier, since they now had the real Miyamoto to frame. Ueda and his men attack Kiryu, but he is saved by the arrival of Ito, who'd recovered from his injuries and learned of the duel from Koetsu. While Ito holds off Ueda and his goons, Kiryu heads off to Sanjusangendo, where Toji was set to attack Denshichiro.
Kiryu arrives just in time to stop Toji from killing Denshichiro. The usurper tries to blackmail Kiryu into letting him proceed by saying that if he is killed, his co-conspirators in the dojo will reveal his true identity to the authorities, but Kiryu is undeterred. Kiryu duels Toji and, despite the traitor's dirty fighting tactics, he ends up killing him. Kiryu tells Denshichiro of his brother's fate and apologizes to him, but Denshichiro understands and thanks Kiryu both for saving him and for giving his brother a warrior's death.
