Ganryu Island (巌流島, Ganryū-jima) is the 12th and final chapter of Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!.
Plot[]
By the time Kiryu returns from Yagyu Village, Haruka has mysteriously gone missing from Gion. He immediately starts trying to find her, but has no luck. Since nobody saw anything suspicious around the time she disappeared, most people in Gion assume she ran away, but Kiryu is not convinced.
One week later, a feast is held in Tsuruya to celebrate Yoshino's departure from the brothel and her engagement to Kiryu. Yoshino and Kiryu celebrate with Ito, Koetsu and their other friends but both are still concerned with Haruka's whereabouts. When Kiryu steps outside to get some air, he is unexpectedly approached by Sasaki Kojiro, who tells him that he had kidnapped Haruka and delivered her to Tenkai at his hideout in Ganryu Island. Apparently Hidetada has grown suspicious of Tenkai, so the treacherous emissary has been gathering allies to overthrow him and install a puppet shogun of his choosing by marrying them to Haruka. When questioned about why he's revealing all this, Sasaki admits he wants to duel Miyamoto Musashi to prove his supremacy as a swordsman, after which he can focus on satisfying his political ambitions.
The next day, Kiryu says goodbye to Ito, Koetsu and Yoshino as he heads out to save Haruka, promising to come back alive with her. He travels to Ganryu Island and, immediately upon arriving, he faces off against Sasaki on the beach. Both samurai draw their swords and have their long awaited rematch, which ends with Miyamoto beating his rival but nonetheless sparing his life. Once bested, Sasaki admits that his hubris about his strength drove him to do terrible things and promises to return to his previous life and reclaim his honor.
However, the pair are interrupted by Tenkai and his thugs, who injure Sasaki by shooting him in the shoulder. The corrupt monk reveals that the army he's been massing will soon arrive to prepare for their rebellion against the Tokugawa Bakufu. Despite the odds being against him, Miyamoto stands defiant and attacks Tenkai's thugs, prompting the emissary to flee with a captive Haruka in tow. Kiryu fights his way through dozens of Tenkai's men and eventually corners the traitor on top of a cliff. The high-monk draws a pistol and tries to kill Miyamoto, but the swordsman easily defeats him and frees Haruka.
Just as the emissary is defeated, Shogun Hidetada makes his arrival, having apparently discovered Tenkai's plans and come to the island to confront him. Hidetada tries to kill Tenkai, but is stopped by Kiryu, who tells him that he must subject the traitor to a trial before executing him. Unfortunately, this triumph is short-lived, as boats carrying Tenkai's allies appear off the coast of the island. A sneering Tenkai boasts about his oncoming victory, only to be immediately killed by a vengeful Sasaki. Seeing the danger they're all in, Kiryu tells Sasaki and Hidetada to flee with Haruka while he holds back Tenkai's men. Haruka begs Kiryu to come with them, but Kiryu tells her that he has to stay behind to buy them time. Kiryu thanks Haruka for giving his life purpose again and then sends her away. As the army begins to disembark, Miyamoto charges at them with his swords raised.
Epilogue[]
Ten years later, in 1615, Sasaki (now going once again by his birth name of Yagyu Munenori) and General Marume command Tokugawa Bakufu forces during the Siege of Osaka. Both men are coordinating a plan for their units to break into Osaka Castle and rescue Shogun Hidetada's daughter from the rebelling Toyotomi Clan forces. When the two commanders ask for two volunteers for the most dangerous part of their attack plan, several soldiers volunteer, inspired by the legend of Miyamoto Musashi.
Nearby, Majima Gorohachi; who survived his fall off Kiyomizu Temple, stares out at the night sky and wonders if Kiryu survived his final battle against Tenkai's men and reunited with his loved ones or if he perished and now looks over all of Japan from the heavens.
