SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin! follow. (Skip)

Sengoku has started charging members of the Ishin Shishi movement to use his home as a hiding place while they plot against the Bakufu. However, Okita Soji, Captain of the 1st Division of the Shinsengumi, discovers this and offers Sengoku a deal: In exchange for money, on an appointed night, Sengoku will get the shishi hiding in his mansion drunk, making it easier for Okita and his men to swoop in and arrest them. Additionally, Okita also wishes to bring Sakamoto Ryoma along on this mission so he can set-up an ambush against him in Sengoku's mansion, since Okita wants to fight Sakamoto to test his impressive skills.

On the night of the raid, Okita brings Sakamoto along but doesn't tell him that Sengoku is in on the plan. When the assault on the mansion begins, Okita and his men become occupied dealing with the shishi, while Sakamoto goes to capture Sengoku by himself. Sakamoto pursues the merchant throughout his mansion, battling multiple waves of his personal guard, including at one point dodging his way past a mounted machine gun which Sengoku is operating. Sakamoto ultimately pins down Sengoku in his sitting room after he defeats his last line of defence: Three club-wielding guards decked out in gold-plated armor.

Just as Sakamoto is arresting a confused Sengoku, Okita arrives and reveals the entire scheme to his colleague. Sengoku is relieved to see Okita and begins idly chatting with him, propositioning that he and the Shinsengumi should continue to work together. However, in speaking with Okita, Sengoku makes two mistakes that anger the 1st Division Captain: He insults Serizawa Kamo (who unbeknownst to Sengoku, is Okita's mentor and friend) and he reveals that Okita was tending Sakamoto a trap as well. Irritated by Sengoku's loose-mouth, Okita proceeds to kill him with a stroke of his sword.
