Sohei Dojima (堂島 宗兵, Dōjima Sōhei) is a major character in the series. He is the patriarch of the Dojima Family, which at its height, was the largest and most powerful family in the Tojo Clan. He is first introduced in Yakuza 1/Yakuza Kiwami as a minor character - he dies at the beginning of the game, and his death instigates its plot. He then appeared in flashbacks in Yakuza 2/Yakuza Kiwami 2. In Yakuza 0, which was set 7 years prior to his death in the first game, he is featured as the main antagonist.

Sohei Dojima is of average height (in 0 he is shown to be shorter than Kuze, Awano, and Shibusawa), with a modest build. His black/grey hair is cut very short. In 0, he is either depicted wearing a tan colored kimono or a suit. In the original Yakuza, he is only shown when Kiryu arrives to find him dead, where he is wearing a white suit with a red dress shirt and tie. In the flashback during Yakuza 2, he is shown to be much younger, having a slightly larger build, his hair darker and a little longer, and he is sporting a slight beard. Throughout his appearances, he wears a pair of aviator sunglasses at all times, even indoors.
Dojima is first mentioned in Yakuza 1 by Nishiki who, when Kiryu says that his application for his own family hadn't been accepted by Patriarch Dojima, sarcastically tells him that there's no way he would object because Kazama had his weight behind it, due to Kazama being the only one keeping the Dojima family afloat. Nishiki then continues that all Dojima does is "yak about the glory days". A little further on in the story, it is said that Dojima was morally corrupt, having a violent temper, cheating on his wife frequently, as it was said that he had a mistress on every corner, and was overall unpleasant. During the flashback in Yakuza 2, when discussing the extermination of the Jingweon, he is understanding of Kazama's objections to the attack and considers his proposal to instead drive them out. But he also concurs with Shimano, deciding that they have gone too far.
Prior to Yakuza 0
Sohei rose to power during the rise of the Tojo Clan. It is unknown when exactly he joined the Tojo Clan or why.
His son Daigo Dojima was born to him and his wife Yayoi Dojima in 1976. It is said that Sohei engaged in many affairs during his marriage; Yayoi knew, but remained faithful and loyal to him. Kazuma Kiryu had been a friend to Daigo since he was a child.
In 1980, due to the string of Dojima Family members being killed by the Jingweon Mafia, a Korean syndicate, he ordered his two lieutenants - Shintaro Kazama and Futoshi Shimano - to eliminate all members of the rival group. This led to the infamous Jingweon massacre, during which 36 members of the group were killed, but Kazama mercifully (and secretly) spared three Jingweon members. The purging of the Koreans made the Dojima Family a major force within the Tojo Clan and solidified their ownership of Kamurocho.
At some point, Dojima and Kazama attacked Elder Chen's mafia. The resulting actions left many women and children killed, and the mafia was confined into Little Asia, which caused Chen and his community to be distrustful of Kiryu later on.
By 1988, during the events of Yakuza 0, Kazama had become the Captain of the Dojima Family, while the Shimano Family was now a direct subsidiary of the Tojo Clan. Kazama had inducted two of his foster children, Kiryu and Akira Nishikiyama, into the Dojima Family. Replacing Shimano and Kazama, Dojima now had three lieutenants: Daisaku Kuze, who ran the Kenno Clan; Hiroki Awano, who ran the Taihei Association; and Keiji Shibusawa, who ran the Shibusawa Family.
There were two men in the Dojima Family known to have a dragon on their back; Shibusawa, and Kiryu. The later would famously be known among yakuza for decades as the "Dragon of Dojima" due to his accomplishments.
Yakuza 0: 1988
Sohei Dojima was a key figure in the race to acquire the Empty Lot. The lot was key to the Kamurocho Revitalization Process, because the tiny piece of land was an object to development, so Sohei needed to acquire the lot else all the money he'd already invested in the lot's area would be wasted. Due to Kazama being arrested, Dojima promised the position of Captain to whichever lieutenant could acquire the lot. Dojima also led a secret plan to try to expel Kazama from the family, by framing Kiryu for the murder of a civilian, in order to make Kazama take the blame as the one who brought Kiryu in. He had Kuze cut off the end of his pinky as punishment for him failing to defeat Kiryu, and having been exposed as lying to Sohei in his failed efforts to kill Kiryu.
Sohei personally hires Lao Gui, the most expensive hitman in Asia, to act as his bodyguard and assassin during the Empty Lot dispute. Ultimately, Shibusawa is the one who secures Dojima time with the owner of the lot, Makoto Makimura. She offers the lot in exchange for the heads of Dojima's three lieutenants who were responsible for killing her brother in pursuit of the lot; Dojima has Lao Gui shoot her since her being dead would mean she could not raise an issue with the lot being developed over. In revenge for this, Goro Majima, whom had developed a bond with Makoto, storms the family headquarters, and nearly kills both the assassin and Dojima, before Masaru Sera - who is able to claim the empty lot for his own - arrives and dissuades him.
As of the culmination of the dispute, Lao Gui was taken as a prisoner by Sera's group, Awano had died, and both Shibusawa and Kuze had been arrested, leaving Dojima with none of his lieutenants.
Without the lot, Dojima's chance at becoming the Tojo Clan's Third Chairman falls apart, and he is instead appointed as the guardian to Sera (who becomes the Third Chairman himself). This levels de facto control of the Dojima Family to Kazama. It is stated during the credits of Yakuza 0 that Dojima was left languishing in his glorious past during his decline.
Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami: 1995
In October 1995, Dojima kidnaps Yumi Sawamura, the foster sister of Kiryu and Nishiki, and attempts to rape her. In rage, Nishiki shoots and kills Dojima. In order to allow Nishiki to spend time with his dying sister, Kiryu volunteered to take the blame and be arrested for Dojima's murder. In the years that followed, the Kazama Family became a direct subsidiary of the Tojo Clan, and Nishiki formed his own family that later split from Kazama's and became direct as well.
The truth of Dojima's murder became publicly known to the members of the Tojo Clan ten years later, after which point Sohei's wife and son came to be on very good terms with Kiryu. Daigo would later go on to become the Sixth Chairman of the Tojo Clan.
- In the film Like a Dragon: Prologue, he is played by Harumi Sone, who is bald.
- The given height of 170 cm (5′ 7″) is based on the character model's scaling factor within the game's data. For Dragon Engine games, this method is believed to be very accurate (±1 cm). However, this is intended as an estimate, not a substitute for an official statistic.
