Suzuki Mikisaburo (鈴木 三樹三郎, Suzuki Mikisaburō) is a character featured in Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin!/Like a Dragon: Ishin! based on the real-life historical figure of the same name. He is the Shinsengumi Captain of the Ninth Division.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
In Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin!, Suzuki is based on Kan Ogita; he is a short, thin man with a gaunt face. He has long, dark hair which he wears in a ponytail.
In Like a Dragon: Ishin!, he is instead based on Kanji Koshimizu.
Attire[]
For bottoms Suzuki wears a pair of dark green hakama, and on top he wears a black kimono with his light-blue Shinsengumi Captain's haori over it. He also always wears a dark metal half-helm on his head.
Personality[]
Suzuki is firmly loyal to Ito Kashitaro, a relative of his who is also the one who got him to join the Shinsengumi.
Suzuki believes that sword-fighting is quickly becoming an outmoded form of combat and insists on the importance of gun marksmanship as a superior fighting skill, claiming that "No amount of sword skill matters when you stand before a foe with a gun". Despite this, his marksmanship appears to be quite poor, since he misses four shots in a row when aiming at Okada Izo from across a room, only a few meters away from him.
Involvement[]
Background[]
Suzuki joined the Shinsengumi after he had changed his name from the Miburoshigumi in early 1867. Within the group's leadership, Suzuki is an expert in firearms combat.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin!/Like a Dragon: Ishin!: 1867[]
In 1867, after Sakamoto Ryoma (under the alias of "Saito Hajime") joins the Shinsengumi and is immediately instated as the Captain of the Third Unit by Vice-Commander Hijikata Toshizo, Suzuki is among the Unit Captains who voices his displeasure about it. Suzuki also expresses disapproval about Commander Kondo Isami's continued absence from the high-command's meetings, insisting that a new leader should be selected to replace him. Hijikata questions whether by "a new leader" Suzuki means Military Advisor Ito Kashitaro, who is Suzuki's relative and the one who gave him his position, but Suzuki contends that he didn't necessarily mean Ito. Hijikata dismisses Suzuki's complaint, saying that Commander Kondo was directly appointed by the Shogunate, so only they can remove him.
A few days later, Okada Izo, an assassin for the Tosa Loyalist Party, is tracked to an illegal gambling hall by some of Sixth Unit Captain Inoue Genzaburo's men. Since Okada is one of the Shogunate's most wanted men, Inoue recruits Sakamoto, Suzuki and 7th Unit Captain Tani Sanjuro to assist him in capturing the rebel samurai. Suzuki and Tani reach the gambling hall first and, against Inoue's request, they barge in to capture Okada without waiting for him and Sakamoto. Tani charges at a sitting Okada, only for Okada to slice off his legs from under him and then stab him in the throat once he's fallen. A shocked Suzuki draws his revolver and fires at Okada repeatedly but he misses most shots and Okada deflects the last one. Without time to reload, Suzuki unsheathes his sword and attacks Okada, but the other man easily kills him with a single slash across the chest.
