Thanatos (タナトス, Tanatosu) is a substance created by DD that transforms people into zombies. This sets in motion the zombie outbreak in Kamurocho. It is a key element that ties together a number of subplots in Yakuza: Dead Souls.

Before the events of Dead Souls, Tetsuo Nikaido recruits DD to help lure both Kazuma Kiryu and Ryuji Goda back to Kamurocho, as well as destroy the Tojo Clan by the use of Thanatos. When Hiroshi Hayashi gets wind of the fact that they are planning something, he confronts DD in their office. Hayashi confronts DD in a room at Omi Alliance Headquarters to ask what he is planning. Nikaido then comes in and shoots Hayashi, saying that it is rude to ask about another man's business. After this, DD brings out a tranquillizer gun, saying that he had been looking for a "man with some grit," and injects Hayashi with Thanatos.
Now infected and transformed into a zombie, Hayashi travels to Tokyo and spreads the infection. Once enough people are zombified, an outbreak is declared and the Japan Self-Defense Force begins enacting countermeasures to keep the infection from spreading too much.
The reason for DD creating Thanatos was because it released endorphins that made people feel good, and he thinks it is laughable that people struggle through the pain of everyday life for nothing.
Project X Zone 2[]
The Thanatos virus is one of the major plot elements of this crossover game.
M. Bison is the one responsible for spreading the virus across Kamurocho along with using B.O.W.s and cloning Aragamis as well. All when preparing to use the Psycho Drive to invade other worlds.
Both the Thanatos and Bison were stopped by Ryu, Ken, Ingrid, Kiryu, Majima and Ryo in chapter 38.
